First diary, so be kind...
This may be a yet-explored effect of McCain’s inability to answer a simple-straightforward question. McCain already seemed to be forced by the right to choose a pro-lifer, as they were outraged by the idea of Lieberman or Ridge as running mates. The CW, the pundits, and the betting markets (I acknowledge that even collectively, these sources might not be worth much) had it narrowed down to Pawlenty and Romney.
Although Romney certainly has some weaknesses, I always felt he would be one of the strongest picks McCain could make. He has executive experience in both the public and private sectors, status as an "outsider," name recognition in Michigan, and the (albeit unjustified) reputation of someone strong on the economy.
But what else does he have? I’m guessing countless houses. Even if Romney makes sure to know the exact number before any reporter could ask him, I can’t imagine McCain selecting a running mate who would so naturally remind everyone of the campaign’s newest problem. And remember that McCain himself tried to paint Romney as out of touch with everyday voters during the primary season. Can McCain really now afford to tie himself to Romney and still be able to convince the American public that his campaign understands their problems?
So that leaves McCain with Pawlenty. I don’t take Pawlenty lightly, but I can’t see him adding much to the ticket. He was barely elected (and barely re-elected) in his home state. He may generate a small bump in Minnesota, but nowhere else, and I doubt it would be enough to take the state. And seeing the 72-year old McCain campaigning next to the 47-year old Pawlenty would only highlight the age issue.
