Please watch this video in support of Obama. I stumbled upon it almost by accident in a PS to a message from MoveOn. Very inspiring, many celebrities, and goose-bump-(or tear)-inducing clips from one of Dr. King's most moving speeches.
The first time I watched it I thought it might be too much, like Obama's gonna lead us to the Promised Land. He's not the Messiah, I know that, and I resist that cult-of-personality thinking. But play it through to the end, and it's asking, if/when you get to the top of the mountain, tell us what you see, remember me. It's not promising paradise, just being hopeful of getting a glimpse of it, or hearing about a glimpse of it. That has been way too long delayed, and that may still be asking too much of Obama as a man, but from Dr. King's point of view, his election will be a huge step in the right direction. Not just for Black Americans, for all Americans.
. . . when people of ALL colors . . .
This is important for us all, but so are the other hopes for change that reside in Obama's candidacy (and I use those words on purpose---I do not believe that they can ever become cliches). This is not change we can believe in, this is change we need! (Change Before It's Too Late---thanks Frank Rich at the NYT!)
Comments, please, if you do think it goes to far toward sanctifying Obama. Or why you think it does not. I think this could be a great discussion.
