If you take a look on the reco list, there is a diary titled Fox reporter humiliated at Denver march. It's managed a good number of comments, and seems to maintain the opinion that this was a glowing victory moment for someone, though I cannot fathom who.
So I must ask, exactly how is this a good thing in any way?
Haha, look, FoxNews didn't censor "Fuck" from their live stream! Woohoo, that dorky guy looked like a jackass! Yay, there were angry people on the teevee!
How does that help me, or you, or our cause, or the left, or Obama, or anyone other than FoxNews and John McCain? Why are we celebrating what is actually a childish moment as some shining beacon of progress?
As much as I despise FoxNews, from their "reporters" to their tactics to their owner, they do still have viewers. Most of those viewers are also voters. As a result of the "Fuck You Fox" moment, regardless of how much FoxNews planned out their entrapment, their viewers saw exactly what FoxNews wanted them to see: angry, near-violent people marching in Denver for the Democratic National convention. The average FoxNews viewer probably either missed or ignored the line, "not all of them are Obama fans." FoxNews has framed every bit of this video to portray Democrats as rude and likely violent. They couldn't have paid actors for a better scene.
I know that we are eager to see positive change in our political system, but saying "fuck you" to a reporter from any network is not the way. If Obama could win the election without a single undecided, moderate democrat, moderate republican, or independent vote, many of us wouldn't be posting here at DailyKos, sharing good news and information to help advance our cause. We, as citizens with hope of positive change, must understand that every vote we can get is important. We must also understand that some people do watch FoxNews, for good or ill, and every event we trumpet that merely adds fuel to their fire is a detriment to our cause. To think otherwise is foolish.
It is an election year, one of the few times that we actually have an oppotunity to influence - through our votes cast - the state of our nation. We must be willing to reach out to undecided voters to advance our cause. At times we must even be willing to tone down our rhetoric in an effort to bring about broad and lasting change.
Would you walk in to a blind date swinging your dick around in every direction?
We must be willing to work with others, and just as we want them to be receptive to our cause, we should make our own cause receptive to them. That doesn't mean we should abandon our mission of bringing the troops home or punishing the political firing of US attorneys. But if we are approached by a "reporter" that will broadcast his own political slant to even a handful of voters, we should at least be gentile enough to refuse comment in a manner that won't show us as being angry or militant. Chanting "Fuck Fox News" only plays into the hands of FoxNews and McCain. We shouldn't give FoxNews any credibility by allowing them to host a debate, but we also shouldn't further alienate their viewers - be it a handful or a hundred million - by providing them with anti-left material. Having video of a group of "left-wing protesters confront[ing]" FoxNews is one thing, but we don't need to give them a few thousand angry supportive comments from our community.
