By having their convention in the Pepsi center the Democratic Party is ignoring years of partisan bickering over Coke v. Pepsi.
Seems no one among the talking heads or on the Internet seem to recall that Pepsi has long been the drink of Republicans.
The Coke-Pepsi divide goes back decades.
When Nixon (remember him?) failed in his race for governor in 1962 Pepsico picked him up as a corporate lawyer. They had him do basic international work for them, which also gave him the much needed money to travel the world, meet world leaders and lay the groundwork for his 1968 return. (Remember: "He's tanned, rested and ready.")
So by late January 1969 all the Coke machines in the White House were taken out and Pepsi machines moved in.
Then came detente and the opening of business opportunities with the Soviet Union -- all thanks to Nixon. And what American soft drink company got the exclusive contract in the USSR? Pepsi.
A few years later and a Democratic southern governor took the White House. Out went the Pepsi machines and in went the Coke machines.
That same southern fellow established diplomatic relations with China.
And the US company that got the exclusive contract to operate in China? Coke.
Word is when the GOP went to New York they bought out the Coke contract at Madison Square Garden so they could bring in Pepsi. (I have heard this story repeated several times by young conservatives and old-time Democrats.)
So again...
What's with the Dems in the Pepsi Center. Have they no sense of history?
