Elections are won by getting people excited and motivated to vote for you, to volunteer for you, canvas neighborhoods for you, tell all their friends and even complete strangers about you.
There's an simple, tried and true, effective way to do that for the candidate of your choice which has the equivalent of wearing your heart on your sleeve.
Bumper Stickers.
You see them everywhere, promoting anything from 'Peace on Earth' to 'My baby is an honor roll student at XYZ Elementary'. You can learn something about the person driving in front of you by the bumper sticker they have on the back of their car. They can be long term commitments of a firmly held belief such as 'Jesus Saves', which will stay on that car until they sell it or the elements deteriorate it until it is illegible. They can be catchy phrases that made you laugh, like 'If you can read this, YOU'RE TOO CLOSE! BACK THE F*CK OFF!' that you'll just scrape off of the back once you tire of them (although it won't be easy.)
And now, I guess I'll get to the subject of this diary. I drive around as we all do, going about my daily business, and I see literally dozens of Obama bumper stickers. Now in downtown Chicago, for example, probably not a remarkable experience. But for a city with a 6 term Republican mayor in a state that's voted for Bush in the last two elections, it's probably something to take note of.
What I haven't seen, in my travels here, or even when I traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC recently (where there were many vehicles from several states), is ONE John McCain bumper sticker. Considering that I still see 'W' and 'Bush/Cheney' on the occasional car, I found it astonishing. It's not one of those things that you notice until it pops into your head offhandedly, and I find it hard to believe that there can't be any circulating around the country.
So I ask, have YOU seen a John McCain bumper sticker on the back of a car?
