When I heard that McCain had announced his VP pick early Friday morning, I was angry. Earlier in the day, I had walked into conversations among coworkers on Barack's speech the night before. But by noontime, those conversations were all about McCain.
I was enraged. Not by the pick but by the timing.
Didn't this announcement violate 200 years of American political tradition? Haven't both political parties laid low when the other party had their convention?
Yes, I know by Friday the convention was over, but can anyone out there point me to some historic precedent on the timing of an announcement like this?
I read somewhere where someone in the Barack campaign had said that if McCain had made this announcement on Thursday night, it would be "political malpractice". And that such timing would backfire on McCain. So they held the announcement to Friday. But wasn't making the announcement on Friday also malpractice?
When I went home last night, I did a headline search and sure enough, the headlines were all about Potin or Patin or Polin or whatever her name is. But nowhere did I see any comments on the disgusting nature of the timing of this. Even the HuffPost had replaced the Obama phenomena from the night before with this VP story.
I've even done a review of Daily Kos and was unable to find a diary on this. (Though I must admit, finding the right tags to do a search was difficult so I may have missed it.)
Personally, I think this timing is an example of just how corrupt the Republican party has become in the last 20 years. Or am I off base? Did anything like this happen in 1956? 1960? 1964? Etc?
Anybody?
