It's a pleasant Saturday afternoon here in Manhattan. It's Labor Day weekend and I've been reading the news and blogs about the ridiculous pick of Sarah Palin as potential VP of the United States. Weather here is mid-70's and I should be going outside soon to enjoy the weather. Why am I not? I'm glued to news about Gustav.
Hurricane Gustav is officially a Category 4, but according to a live video I just watched on CNN, FEMA said it's a Category 5. This is pretty much 3 years to the day since Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf coast. I am curious and concerned to see what will happen on Monday and Tuesday. Will all the residents of New Orleans please pick up and leave? Are people who are unable to move being helped out of their house, and are hospitals being evacuated? There are so many questions.
It is coincidence and bad luck for Republicans that this will hit, probably as a Cat 4 or 5, on the second day of their convention. Sure politically it will evoke memories of Katrina and the Bush Admin's terrible response to it. But more importantly - as a citizen - is the Government (Federal, State, local) doing everything it can to get everybody out... including pets NOW?!
I believe if this hits as a Category 5 those levees will breach. Why wouldn't they. Are they stronger since 2005?
Everyone please chime in here. We'll have plenty of time to dissect Sarah Palin. She's a weak candidate. It was a bad choice for McCain -- but this should take precedence. Let's help make sure Gustav is not another Katrina. Let's do our part as this site almost always does. Get information out, provide updates.
