Today's the first day of school in these parts. The elder Centerfielder daughter is at her first day of high school. Son Centerfielder is smack dab in the middle of middle school, and the youngest, wearing her brand new pair of glasses, is in 2nd grade. Here's hoping she'll no longer use one eye to read the board and the other to read the books.
First days of school are often difficult. I moved around much while growing up, and so had many first days of school at places where I knew no one. Those were extra difficult. But, being the nerdy type, I also loved the feelings and sights and sounds and smells of going back to school: the new classrooms; the (hopefully) brand new books; the clangs of non-stinky lockers (they got stinky later); the bike racks; the chalk dust; the... well, I said I was a bit nerdy.
Anyone remember the special mimeo machine smell of handouts way way back when?
In a brand new school in 6th grade in upstate New York, everyone else was about to take their 5th year of French (having started in 2nd grade; you don't find that nowadays), and I had had none. They said I'd catch up in no time. I never did.
What are your memorable first days of school?
