Later today history will have officially come full circle, and it only took a near sesquicentential - 148 years to do so.
Later today the Republican Party will nominate to high office someone who has advocated the secession of Alaska from The United States of America.
Remember, Eagleton lasted 18 days.

148 years ago Lincoln, a Republican, was elected and saved the Union. Now there are people who still want to tear it apart. And they will be nominated.
They may talk all about how their candidate is a great mom -- and grandmother, if you believe the right-wing radio in Alaska. Frankly I never have believed right-wing radio, but just for fairness' sake I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt there.
They may say that she has "What it Takes" and they will talk about executive experience and command experience.
They may talk about how she Sold an Airplane. On eBay. And how that shows Gumption, or something.
They may talk about how she is a Reformer. Though what of, I couldn't say.
-- Is she a reformer by trying to fire her brother in law and then when he was only suspended she subsequently fired the Public Safety Commissioner in an apparent abuse of power? It's apparently a big deal - she has already Lawyered Up(TM) and depositions will begin in a month?
-- Is she a reformer by having the Taxpayers of Alaska pay for those lawyers?
-- Is she a reformer by running a 527 for Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens and soon-to-be federal prisoner on bribery and corruption?
-- Is she a reformer by participating in the same campaign finance scheme that helped to bring down that Senator?
-- Is she a reformer by making all of the employees of the Town of Wasilla, Alaska a Loyalty-to-the-Mayor Loyalty Test and firing the Chief of Police when he balked?
-- Is she a reformer for firing the librarian for "not supporting the mayor" and banning books?
-- Is she a reformer by contracting with Jack Abramoff's buddy to get $27 million in pork barrel earmarks of Your Tax Money(TM) for a town of 7000 people?
-- Is she a reformer by supporting The Bridge to Nowhere(TM)? Before not supporting it? But taking the money anyway?
-- Is she a reformer for advocating for Creationism to be taught to all the schoolchildren of Alaska?
-- Is she a reformer by calling the Republican President of the Senate for the State of Alaska -- and cancer survivor -- a "cancer" on Alaskan Wing-Nut Radio?
-- Is she a reformer by not supporting her husband's stepmother for a mayoral run because momma supported women's rights? (Well, given the Bush Administration's thirst for hiring relatives and friends, perhaps it does make her a reformer. Though not very loyal.)
-- Is she a reformer by claiming that a visit to Ireland gives her a qualification to be a 73-yeard old heartbeat away from the Presidency when in fact, she had only been on a plane that stopped in Shannon to refuel?
-- Is she a reformer by using the argument that Alaska is close to Russia as a reason for why she is prepared to be a 73-year old's heartbeat away from the presidency?
-- Is she a reformer for public admitting -- only a month or two ago that she doesn't have the foggiest idea what a Vice President does.
-- Is she a reformer by refusing to believe in Climate Change as her own state gets smaller and smaller.
-- Is she a reformer by refusing to talk to the media? They are so-interested in talking to her. Right now she's hiding better than Dick Cheney?
Please tell me why she is a reformer.
God, after only four days coming up with that list was like shooting fish in a barrel. Or caged quail on a ranch in South Texas.
They probably will not mention that, as an avid gun owner, NRA member, and moose hunter she might be a better shot than Dick Cheney.
But, they may talk about the Right to Life.
They may even talk about The Need to Drill(TM). Which is great for residents of Alaska, as they get profit sharing.
However, whatever they talk about, whatever she talks about, you can rest assured that they will not talk about how she has advocated the secession of Alaska from The United States of America.
What they won't talk about is The Alaskan Independence Party and how its primary platform is to secede from the United States of America.
What they won't talk about is how she attended their meetings for years. How some claim that she was a member, including some top Alaskan Independence Party members. And how her husband still is.
They won't talk about this speech.
They won't talk about how the leader of the Alaskan Independence Party publicly expressed hatred for the American government, and his hatred for "the damn flag."
They won't talk about the Alaskan Independence Party's slogan "Alaska First," or their other motto "Let them freeze in the dark."
They won't talk about how the leader of the Alaskan Independence Party has advocated the use of infiltration and espionage into the major political parties in order to acheive their ultimate agenda.
The Barbarians are at the Gate.
Let's Crash it first.
