OUCH it's brutal. The last three speakers have been Sarah Pawlenty, Bill Frist, and now it is Sam brownback. It appears tonight the they are playing the "humanitarian" angle talking about AIDS in Africa and now Brownback is leading a chant of "YES we Will" show love for the unborn child regardless of if they are born into poverty or with Downs Syndrome. Now he just said he believes in American exceptionalism, that we have a God given destiny that McCain will help us reach.
Now he's talking about how when McCain takes the oath of office, he will only be able to raise his hand
"this high" because of his war injury.
Now the Dj is getting ironic-- following the Brownback speech with Kenny Loggin's "Footloose" -- from the movie about the oppressive small town where the teens are forbidden from dancing. where's John Ashcroft?
In some ways this pious "we are doing the Lord's work" is more nauseating to watch then last night's explicit hatefest. The morality is so warped, so self-congratulatory, so filled with unreflective certitude.
Okay now we have Oklahoma's Rep Mary Fallin. She is talking about the Oklahoma City bombing and refers to the federal building as "ground zero." Uniting in the face of overwhelming adversity. Now she says many of the first responders came from New York.
It looks like tonight the lead up to McCain's speech is going to try to hit a tone of unity and humanitarian service. Dont expect community organizing to be a calling of ridicule tonight. Too bad the damage was done last night. Last night's tone will settle in our collective memory much deeper than this tepid call to service and sacrifice.
Now we're going to a video of the history of terrorism, starting with Iran in 1979 and moving in a flash to 9/11/2001.
"IT is a war we never chose to fight and for too long we looked the other way"
"buildings burning, bodies falling"
