I'm just trying to understand what was going on at that convention.
This is our Cultural Revolution. I was thinking about S.P.'s speech, and how they will say, Well, Barack Obama decided to run for president based on one good speech. I'm sure that theme is being hammered on talk radio right now. They will never compare the content of the two speeches, or the content of their deeds in office. College is college (she went to 6 colleges in 5 years, although I don't know anything about that story, Harvard was not one of the 6). There's no intellectual discussion, nor is it encouraged. What they've done -- since Nixon - over 40 years ago-- is to undercut intellectuals for their own gain -- Agnew's famous assessment of the press as an "effete corps of impudent snobs".... at the same time he said that, the Khmer Rouge regime was killing intellectuals in Cambodia, including anyone who wore eyeglasses!
Now teachers are afraid to teach evolution. Kids can say, that's just a theory, I don't have to believe it. Librarians are afraid to defend the classics. Global warming is dismissed, and when scientists around the world try to prove it, the extremists do the equivalent of covering their ears and humming. They belittle anything they don't understand, and if you counter their arguments, before you can finish your thought, they're calling you an elitist, and accusing you of talking down to them.
They're willing to tear apart this country rather than let Barack try to fix it, even in this broken state. They may not be killing people who wear eyeglasses, or putting professors in prison, but that's not such a great leap.
Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." The librarian, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire her for not giving "full support" to the mayor.
