I am Pro-Life, but Pro-Choice
I've been visiting Dailykos and reading stuff here for quite a while . I've also been a suscriber for a while, but never posted anything here at all; whether it's a comment or diary.
One of the reasons may have been because of my limited capacity to express myself in English given that it's not my first or second language. But tonight, I have this urge to say something. I just can't hold this any longer because it's been bugging me for so long. I am referring to the idea that republicans are "pro-life" and everybody else, including most democrats, who believe in a woman's right to choose, are "pro-choice/pro-abortion". How does one explain something like that? what does that mean? That's my beef tonight and that's what I'm going to "vent" about. So, please, bear with me.
Let me just first admit that I think those of us who are pro-choice have ourselves to blame in part for our failure to frame this issue the right way, and therefore we left it to the republicans to claim that they hold "the moral high ground" over this matter. I strongly think they do not and should not. Let me explain.
I was educated in french, but I don't think that there can be such a difference in languages between what can be synonymous or opposites. I believe languages for the most part have the same meaning. I don't think the way something is defined in french can be so foreign to its English counterpart. So, if that is the case, how can Pro-life be the opposite of Pro-Choice in English while that is not the case in probably any other languages?
How do we allow republicans, the so-called"pro-lifers" and the media to call us , the democratic party and the majority of its candidates pro-choice while the republicans are pro-life? how could that be?
I can't talk for everybody, but I can surely talk for myself.
Let's me define myself and see where that takes me.
I'm a progressive. I'm a democrat and I strongly believe that I am: Pro-Choice, but Pro-Life. I also believe that most republicans are Anti-Choice, but seldomly Pro-life .
I am pro-life and that's why I am against the death penalty. Most republicans, including John McCain and Sarah Palin are on the other side of the issue. But, still they are called pro-lifers?
I am pro-life and that's why I am against wars of choices and dumb wars because I know that life should be precious and sending young kids to kill or get killed just because one chooses to do so is not what a pro-life individual should advocate or be a supporter of. McCain was one of the main advocates of the Iraq war of choice. Where's the pro-life in him?
I am pro-life and that's why I am in favor of using all means necessary to stop genocides in the world because life should be precious. I never hear McCain advocating for sending troops to Sudan to stop the Genocide there. Where's the pro-life in him?
I am pro-life and that is why I am for the government and other institutions to put in place all types of support systems to help women so that abortions could be as rare as possible. I even hope that there's no abortion at all. However, I am also pro-choice when it comes to that matter. I believe in a woman's right to CHOOSE.
I think that it is very hypocritical for republicans, whether it's John McCain or Sarah Palin to keep telling us that it is not the role of government to stand in the way of the people. People should have th right to choose where they want to send their kids to school. People should be able to choose their own healthcare plan and the list goes on and on. But, this is where they take us for a bunch of fools.
Yes, people should have choices and do what they want, but how about the right of women to choose? are they really telling women that this is one choice they cannot make for themselves? what is so different about that? How is it that the government must have the monopoly when it comes to what a woman can do with her body?
So for me I see most republicans as Anti-Choice and Most Democrats as Pro-Choice. Democrats aren't pro-abortions as the media and the republican party may want you to believe. They are Pro-Choice.
- I see republicans as Pro-life only when it fits their narrow interest for the most part, but I see most democrats as Pro-Life,but Pro-Choice. Democrats don't advocate abortion. They just want a woman to be able to keep her God given right. So, no matter what your personal belief is as an elected official, it shouldn't be up to you to tell a woman what to do with her body, period.
Please, don't let the media and the Republicans continue to twist this issue. Don't let yourselves be called "pro-abortion". Make sure that when you are called that way you object and demand that your are called pro-choice. And when you are debating a republican, don't let him or her be called pro-life as if you were anti-life. The opposite of Pro-life is anti-life and the opposite of pro-choice is anti-choice. We democrats don't claim to be perfect, but when it comes to life, we should be able to defend our pro-life deeds and stances in front of anybody.
We are Pro-Life, but Pro-Choice.
