Crooks and Liars has an interesting post on McCain and his abdicating his party platform over to the religious hard right.
Some of what is talked about really is draconian and quite scary if McCain gets elected.

According to Crooks and Liars, Obama was involved in his party platform and made sure it reflected his views and policies. We expect this from Obama. He is someone who is very pro active and involved in everything that bears his reputation and imprint.
Just as he is in firm and active control of the democratic party now and will be in his administration.
I must say I do find myself in amazement at the way Obama seems to be so in control of things and yet, doesn't seem to be overwhelmed by them.
On the other hand, McCain is proving to be less and less the strong leader he brags that he is.
He has relinquished control of his campaign to Rove's underlings and is now just a programed stepford candidate wound up to perform the way they tell him to.
This accounts for his hard right turn and nasty campaigning. Honor and integrity has given way to the new Rovian ways.
And he now had allowed the platform of his party to be hijacked by far right hard cores who changed them from McCain's policies to theirs. McCain is adjusting to their policy rather then the other way around.
The tip off came when Cindy McCain was interviewed on Wednesday with Katie Couric, she was surprised to learn her husband wanted Roe v Wade completely overturned and makes no exceptions for rape, incest or in case of threat to life of mother.
Back in late July, McCain did admit he did not get into Platform discussions. He left it up to the committee completely. I guess he trusted they would follow his policies and not just rewrite them to reflect their own views.
It seems they also went against McCain's policies in Same Sex Marriage, Stem Cell and Immigration.
Last Tuesday, Chuck Todd said this about the party platform:
They made the decision not to fight these delegates here on this issue. Senator McCain, this platform does not represent Senator McCain’s conservatism. He did not make it his party’s platform. He made it the Republican Party platform, that he happens to be representing. Stark contrast to Barack Obama who went ahead, changed the wording on abortion, put in a line in there that made pro-life Democrats a little more comfortable. That was not done here. If anything this is as stringent of a platform on abortion the Republican Party ever has. And the problem is this. These delegates are more conservative — I had, I had — than, than even the ones four years ago. Than even the ones eight years ago."
What alarms me the most is that McCain is not involved in anything to do with his candidacy. He has allowed his campaign to be seized by Rovians and neocons, his veep pick to be hijacked, and now the GOP platform that reflects the policies of the candidaate, to be written by hard core rightists over his own wishes.
If these are examples of his leadership skills and ability to be strong, forceful leader, then it is very alarming. The man is either so out of touch or without any real backbone despite his public image that we will find our country run by the nasty, ambitious and religious hardcore rightist, Palin for real. And McCain doesn't have to die for that to happen.
Worse then Bush being the puppet of the neocons???
