Remember in the mid 90's, The GOP used to paint that damning image of the "freeloading" inner-city Black women, having babies just to increase their welfare checks. They were "lazy". They were "bilking the system at the expense of the rest of us". The image entered the cultural lexicon with enough fervor to help pass Welfare reform in 96. Yeah well, those people exist for real.
With a few caveats.
A. Juneau couldn't be called the "inner city" on it's most cosmopolitan day.
B. they are mostly White. (almost translucent in the winter months due to limited sun)
C. Unlike Welfare, oil rebates have a much more convoluted trail of being an expense to the rest of us. (but far more dramatic expense)
D. Welfare never raped the land. (as far as I know)
If someone can explain to me how government handouts magically change when they are received by people with lighter skin, I would love to hear it. (see also Corporate Welfare). In the mean time, Alaska owes me money. I need it to put solar panels on my house so I too can reap the benefits of having energy in my backyard.
