So Buffalo's Crazy Jack Davis, apparently somewhat concerned about the possibility of losing his primary to Democrats Jon Powers or Alice Kryzan, pulled a move familiar to those of us in the netroots; he created his very own third party, the Save Jobs and Farms Party, so as to be ensured of a spot on the November ballot.
Shades of Connecticut for Lieberman.
Only thing is, per The Albany Project's Robert Harding, The Crazy Jack Party won't be on the ballot after all. Seems that Davis collected the necessary signatures, but failed to actually file the paperwork on time, rendering them void. From the Buffalo News:
Jack Davis collected 7,000 signatures to get his “Save Jobs and Farms Party” on the November ballot, but he forgot the most important one: his own.
The state Board of Elections on Friday threw Davis’ new party off the November ballot because he failed to file a document accepting the party’s nomination for Congress in the 26th District, commission spokesman Robert A. Brehm said.
“The state board commissioners voted today to determine that the . . . petitions of Mr. Davis are invalid,” Brehm said. “The reason was the failure to timely file an acceptance by the candidate, which is required by state Election Law.”
Oops! Seven thousand painstakingly collected signatures...and what finaly sinks the New York for Davis Save Jobs and Farms party is the personal screwup of its leadership of one.
Seems Davis will actually have to take his chances in the Democratic primary, like everybody else. And should he lose, he won't have the chance to play spoiler as he had wished, in an eminently winnable race for the Democrats.
Primary day is tomorrow; while there is no telling what might happen, and Davis may yet win the primary, let's hope Davis' failed attempt to pull an emergency Lieberman meets with its just desert.
Should Orange to Blue candidate Jon Powers pull this one out, things look a lot better for November.
