NPR invited me to participate in a round table discussion today on News and Notes at 1:20 p.m. EST.
I wrote a diary on August 30 about Stay at Home Moms and their enthusiasm for Palin. Apparently the diary generated some discussion at NPR (this site is amazing that way). I've been a part of the evangelical sub culture for over 20 years, both as participant and lately, as critic. I've homeschooled our five kids and run a business that caters to homeschooling families. I used to be a daily listener to Dr. Dobson.
Today, I'm an active participant in the campaign to elect Obama.
My purpose with this diary is to ask you: what would you say about Sarah Palin and the Mommy Wars - if it were you being interviewed? This is your chance to give advice...
See me on the flip.
Here's what I hope to contribute to the conversation.
I want to tackle the issues that make her unqualified to be VP rather than descend into a discussion of whether she can handle raising children and running for office at the same time.
I'd like to point out that identifying with her as a mother is not reason enough to vote for her.
I find it hypocritical that the religious far right, who has repeatedly emphasized that there is no more sacred task than motherhood, is endorsing a mother of five (with a special needs baby and a teen who is about to become a mother) as their candidate. Had this woman been a Democrat, they would waste no time calling her ambitious and irresponsible for putting her personal career goals ahead of her sacred obligation to her children.
I plan to talk about how my friends who criticized Obama-mania have became overnight raving fans of Palin after one speech and no vetting whatsoever!
I'd also like to suggest that the Democrats are the party of family values this time around.
What else? What would you say if you could?
If there is an Mp3 available afterwards, I'll try to post it.
