On a day when America should focus on remembering those who lost their lives due to the terrorist attacks on our soil, conservative opportunists are using this tragedy to once again try to scare up support for their presidential candidate and failed policies.
National conservative talk radio hosts hadn't been on the air fifteen minutes before they began to exploit the tragedies of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center for political gain. In addition to playing non-stop clips of victims crying due to the terrible events of that day, Glenn Beck spent the morning bemoaning the fact that Americans weren't as nostalgic and fired-up about the events of that day seven years ago as he is. He then posted endless clips of news from that day - including John McCain's own personal thoughts regarding that day to accompany a link to his softball love fest interview with Sarah Palin. He couldn't just pay tribute to the day and mourn the survivors. Glenn Beck had to throw in his patriotic endorsement of McCain and Palin along with some other choice 'headlines' about the harmless 'pig wearing lipstick' comments made by Barack Obama.
Rush Limbaugh, never one to cease to take advantage of anyone's tragedy to get what he wants, also seized upon the opportunity to use the anniversary of that horrible day seven years ago to advance his agenda. He did this before he even had the chance to take the air.
He has posted an article on his website titled "Dems release lame 9/11 report". In this article, he displays his lack of class by continuously referring Democratic Party Presidential Candidate Barack Obama as 'Barry' - while at the same time taking a swipe at our country's embrace of Miranda rights, trying to again make a false link between Saddam Hussein and the Iraq War and the events of 9/11, and working to prop up disgraced and failed President Bush and his 30% approval rating. Where is the mention of the actual events of that day - as well as words honoring those who lost their lives? Evidently, Limbaugh doesn't think those men, women, and children are worthy of web space when compared to his propaganda hit piece in the Democratic Party.
Take a good look at these shameless and self-serving representatives and defenders of McCain-Palin, folks. These are the same people who don't want you to remember the events of one of our nation's worst tragedies in a bi-partisan way. They want to scare and manipulate you into voting with their candidate and party - you know, the same Republican party that used the same tactic to justify their invasion of Iraq? Their mission is one of power - power over your lives, power over your well-being, power over your rights, and power over your votes.
YOU, the American people, are the reason our country rose from the ashes that terrible day. YOU are the ones who worked to take our nation out of the first Bush recession before and following those attacks. YOU are the ones who have persevered and failed to be intimidated by terrorist threats against our great nation. YOU are the ones who refuse to be manipulated by those who would use the events of 9/11 to justify partisan and biased voting based on FEAR, not COMMON SENSE. YOU hold the true power in this country - and rightfully so.
When you finish this day of remembrance and reflection, I urge you to base your analysis of the election to follow on who you believe has the best plan to move our country forward into peace and prosperity. If you believe that John McCain has a better vision for the future of our nation, then he is your rightful choice. If you believe that Barack Obama has the best vision for the future of our country, then he is your rightful choice. Make your decision based on that simple criterion and the issues that accompany it, not some fear-mongering emotional appeal meant to scare you into supporting one person or the other. A single vote based on a citizen's own reasons is the best measure of a true democracy. Remember, Adolf Hitler came to power in Nazi Germany in large part due to his successful ability to undermine the public's ability to think and reason for itself. As an American voter, it is imperative that you educate yourself regarding the issues of our day, decide who has the better vision for the country, and vote accordingly. Don't let those who would twist your emotions for their own selfish purposes manipulate you to vote their way - and for THEIR reasons. Your vote is the most precious tool of democracy - and one that should be cast for your reasons, and yours alone.
