Former Interior Secretary James G. Watt is "electrified" that a fellow member of his Assemblies of God denomination is a candidate for vice president, according to this story in the Arkansas Gazette-Democrat.
"I started praying for her Friday morning, praying that she’ll be protected by the hand of God," the former Reagan administration Cabinet member said.
For anyone who is still mystified by Sarah Palin's popularity, this article on her Pentecostalism certainly helps explain things. It also helps explain the religion. Pentecostals believe:
-- That the age of miracles did not end in the era of the Apostles but continues to this day.
-- Christians can speak in a heavenly language (tongues), can prophesy and can receive divine healing.
-- We live in the last days, and Jesus Christ could return to earth at any time.
Now, it's no surprise that women who believe the same things Palin believes just love her.
"I’m proud of her and for her," said Shonda Walters, a Pentecostal Sunday School teacher from Clarksville. "It seems like she’s worked very hard to get to the place where she is in her life."
But evangelicals who don't believe in speaking in tongues are happy with Sarah Palin.
Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, said McCain has mobilized evangelicals — Pentecostals and non-Pentecostals alike — by picking Palin.
"I have eight women in my office in Nashville. They were clapping their hands, and one of them was literally skipping down the halls" after McCain’s announcement.
I don't think these zealots are going to even notice that tonight Sarah Palin outlined her pathway to war against Russia.
