North Carolina's Senate race is very probably the hottest in the nation right now. It is a true tossup, with dueling polls showing both Democrat Kay Hagan and Republican Elizabeth Dole in the lead.
Small wonder, then, that Dole is forced to outright lie in order to try and hang on against her more vibrant, energetic challenger.
From a Hagan campaign press release:
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Continuing her negative attacks and outright lies, Elizabeth Dole today released a commercial saying that Kay Hagan is opposed to offshore drilling, even though Kay has repeatedly voiced her support for drilling. Weeks ago, Kay challenged Elizabeth Dole to sign on to the bipartisan "Gang of 10" proposal in the U.S. Senate, which Kay supports. Elizabeth Dole has still refused to add her name to the bipartisan list of senators who support this compromise bill.
"Elizabeth Dole is flat-out lying and her credibility on this issue is laughable," said Hagan Campaign Communications Director Colleen Flanagan. "Elizabeth Dole has funded her campaigns with nearly $300,000 in contributions from Big Oil and rewarded them in Washington by handing over the keys to America’s energy policy. She has given them $17 billion in tax breaks while they’re making record profits and North Carolinians are paying record prices. Kay has been the only candidate in this race who, from Day 1, has pledged to end tax breaks to oil companies and end our dependence on foreign oil through greater investments in exploration, responsible drilling, conservation and alternative fuels."

Claiming that Hagan opposes offshore drilling is just false, regardless of how we feel about Hagan's position. It's almost as false as, say, a 35-year resident of Kansas and the Watergate Hotel in DC, claiming to be a North Carolinian.
