Hurricane Ike, heading straight for Texas, now has a diameter of about 750 miles.
Hurricane Ike's gargantuan size — not its strength — will likely push an extra large storm surge inland in a region already prone to it, experts said Thursday.

The Price of Gas Is Too High to Safely Evacuate 20 Million people!
Hurricane Ike is expected to wreck skyscrapers in Houston, with broken glass and metal scraps flung over large areas.
Thousands of residents of Texas' vulnerable Gulf Coast clogged highways heading inland Thursday as they heeded mandatory evacuation orders. Hurricane Ike churned through warm gulf waters and took aim at southeast Texas.

The press has reported much confusion as to why not everyone is urged to evacuate:
How long does it take to drive five hundred miles?
It takes about 10 hours of non-stop driving (at 50 miles per hour) to cover 500 miles – and get clear of the storm’s periphery (which itself is moving at almost 20 miles per hour).
To FEMA’s last discredit: The Price of Gas Is Too High to Safely Evacuate 20 Million people!
Too little, too late?
Residents living in single-family homes in some parts of coastal Texas face "certain death" if they do not heed orders to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Ike's arrival, the National Weather Service said Thursday night.

Sarah Palin’s Promise of SHORT-CHANGE:
Sarah Palin defended herself against charges of inexperience on Thursday, insisting she is ready to serve America as vice-president - but then appeared to be ignorant of the "Bush doctrine" which has defined much of American national security policy in recent years.

Palin’s supporters immediately reacted by saying that the Bush Doctrine actually has many facets. But Palin had time to discuss all of them. She mentioned absolutely none – other than a need "to rid the world of Islamic (expletive)..."
Asked if America should go to war with Russia if Georgia was attacked again, she replied: "Perhaps so." But before the hockey Mom openly bullies Russia (if McCain breaks a hip) here is something she probably needs to know:
MOSCOW was creating a nuclear weapon capable of thwarting any defence system in the world, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said today. "There is not now and will not be any defence from such missiles," the Interfax news agency quoted Ivanov as saying. Russia has said on repeated occasions that it was developing missiles capable of penetrating the missile defence shield being developed by the United States, the construction of which Moscow had furiously opposed. Analysts have suggested that Russia is developing a missile which can "zig-zag" while in flight and thereby dodge anti-missile defences.

A post script: It was reported that John McCain doesn’t know how to use the Internet. Almost immediately, Karl Rove fired back by releasing a poll which indicates that the Internet does not help people learn... This will be a chuckle to follow.
But Ike will make us cry.
It should be clear by now that the McCain-Palin ticket will short-change everyone. Even Republicans.
