I'm an atheist and a skeptic, I don't believe in anything supernatural. That said, I am a firm believer in tax karma and the rich asshole wing of the Republican party is about to get spanked by it. Hard.
And the best part is, it doesn't matter who wins.
In Fools on the Hill's diary, he posted an interview with Alan Greenspan in which he gave dire news about the economy and it led to a discussion about taxes.
It is my position that, no matter who is going to be in office, taxes will be raised.
We simply don't have the money to pay for basic goods and services that even most Republicans expect. Roads aren't being paved. Police and fire crews are being downsized. Parts of our infrastructure have become extremely unsafe. All of these things have always been considered the domain of government and only the staunchest free-marketers disagree with that.
Faced with what could potentially be the most expensive war in history, a crashing housing market, government bailouts and so on, the Bush tax cuts are simply not sustainable. The money has to come from somewhere and people are against privatizing those and many other government services. As far as I can see, there's really only one option- raise taxes or the country will literally crumble.
So, how to do it-
You can't hit the middle class too hard or you will lose their all-important votes. You can't hit the poor because they can't afford it. But you know where there's a lot of ready tax money available? Investments and inheritances, especially investments, because you can't try and get sympathy out of it.
That is exactly what will happen over the next few years. I honestly do not see any other reasonable way they can pull it off.
Tax karma is a bitch.
