I lived in the former Yugoslavia for several years. Never thought I'd say it but under GW Bush our government resembles Tito's.
During my army career I was an exchange officer in Yugoslavia in the early-1970s and Army attache in the US Embassy in Belgrade from 1980-82.
As the financial debacle has grown and Bush has started to bail out the greedy folks who got in trouble because he did not regulate them in the first plce, my thoughts turned to my experiences in Yugoslavia.
In retrospect it seems to me that Tito's government resembled that of George W Bush and John McCain in a number of important ways:
It was run by an old boy clique similar to the neocons who form the backbone of the Bush Administration
It was very corrupt, with the leadership enjoying a much higher standard of living than the proleteriat
It practiced a form of state socialism very similar to what we are observing today. That is, it propped up failing industries at the expense of the workers
Tito would be proud of the Bush/McCain socialist regime!
