It occurred to me today that the very real possibility exists that the Obama campaign might actually top $100 million in contributions in the month of September. No, I'm not insane in the membrane, nor do I think such a thought is establishing too high a goal. It's actually not that much of a reach.
Oh, can you imagine the press coverage of an Obama announcement in mid-October, just 3 weeks before the election, of a $100 million dollar month?! Hop below the fold for a look at the math...
One Hundred Million Dollars...
Consider, Obama pulled $66 million in August. That didn't include Obama's $10 million dollar early-September shot in the arm thanks to the Palin nomination. It also doesn't include the $9 million dollars he pulled in Hollywood with Babs singing.
Add $66M + $10M + $9M and you get...$85M. I know the Dem convention was in August and that pulled in big money too pushing Obama up to $66M, but I'm assuming for argument's sake that he'd pull that again in September.
Next, if you take just the 2.5M in individual donors that have given to Obama as of August, and if they each contribute just $10 each in the month of September, over and above any normal monthly donations they make, you get...$25M.
Add $85M and $25M and you get $110 Million. So, given that I've factored in a little wiggle room too, I don't think it's that unrealistic, nor do I feel that it'd be setting the campaign up for failure, to suggest he may reach $100M in September!
And just think about the news coverage and momentum that Obama would receive by announcing in mid-October, just 3 weeks before election day, that people thought so much of him that they donated $100 million...in the single month of September! Frankly, it'll be Obama's last donor announcement before the election, so why not make it an "Oh my gawd" moment?! Let's send a message, loud and clear, down the home stretch!
In contrast, McCain is receiving $84M for doing nothing more than taking money from the government...I know that's a bit of a stretch...so sue me. Still, quite a difference between Obama and McCain on this point.
Today is September 17th, so there are ~two weeks left in September! I just sent in another donation today. Empty out that wallet folks, or McCain will start doing it against your will starting in January.
Just do it!
