My husband and I are doing all we can to help Obama get elected. I do blogging and he does FOOD!!(UPDATE- see more ideas below the fold) He makes lunches for the phone bankers, and he put together the most awesome dinner for the Obama nomination acceptance speech last month. Because the first debate is coming up next week, I wanted to tell you all about it, so you can do something similar.
For the nomination acceptance speech at Invesco Field, we asked each person we invited to our house to watch the speech to bring a food from a place that Obama had lived or worked. We suggested that they think about Kansas, Boston, Chicago, Kenya, Hawaii and Indonesia. You can do that for the debates too.
The final menu was incredible. We had 45 people for the speech and about 20 different dishes -- Irio (meat stew and mashed potatoes) from Kenya; gado gado, nasi goreng from Indoensia; samosas; pupus and Kahlua pig from Hawaii; Chicago style pizza; green bean casserole from Kansas (the kind with the crispy onions on top); baked beans from Boston; arugula and broccoli salads and ice cream, Obama's favorite dessert. Everyone raved about the food, and they all left feeling great about Obama -- about his ideas and about his food choices! Try this for the debates!
Here are some more food ideas for Obama parties and fundraisers. Today we are making hors d'ouvres for a fundraiser. We took toasted crostinis, put a slice of fresh tomato, a tiny piece of mozzarella and fresh basil and then drizzled them with lemon zest olive oil, salt and pepper. Yum. Then we took uncooked flour tortillas (brand is Tortillaland), cut out small circles like we were making cookies, put thinly sliced red onions, crumbled gorgonzola cheese and baked at 375 for a few minutes. These are two great finger food ideas to help Obama!
