Apologies if this has been diaried already but my rudimentary search didn't turn up anything.
We've all heard about how Sarah Palin, the newly elected Mayor of Wasilla, fired Police Chief Irl Stambaugh shortly after she took office. Stated reasons were numerous and have been diaried very well by DemocraticLuntz and others. One of the reasons for the firing was because of Palin's displeasure with his opposition to a state bill that would do allow concealed weapons in bars. Interestingly, Newsweek's latest installment on Troopergate says this:
But weeks after Palin beat Stein in 1996, she expressed displeasure with the chief. One big issue, Stambaugh said, was that he and other police chiefs had opposed a state-legislature bill to permit concealed weapons in schools and bars, which Stambaugh called "craziness."
That's right, SCHOOLS and bars.
I've no idea where Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball, the authors of this piece, came up with this information but if true, I think this might be something the Obama campaign could run with.
Sorry for the short diary but I'm off to the movies with my kids. Again if this is old news, I'll delete.
