Can catchphrases block a candidate?
Are these stupid catchphrases being passed around now obscuring us from the facts? I haven't heard much Palin issue talk, but I am well aware of the fact that she is a "hockey mom" and what the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is. This is ridiculous, but it's just how the republicans play hardball. And when Obama used the phrase "you can put lipstick on a pig and it's still a pig," there was more than an uproar on the news. I haven't heard much about his politics since.
Catchphrases have obscured a lot of things. Take for example Manny Ramirez. As a Red Sox fan I was outraged when Manny's childish antics were being slapped with the tag "Manny Being Manny," and being either disregarded, or, even worse, praised. Back to the Election. Sarah Palin is now being excused because of her "hockey mom" status, just like Manny and his ordeal.
These phrases are really the way that McCain and Palin have even a chance of winning. Obama, although possibly being the hipper candidate, has not mastered this art yet. And I know it wouldn't fit Biden's old-school political tactics.
If we voted not because of the phrase that appealed (as some do), but because of the candidate, it would be just. But that's not gonna happen soon. These one-liners are starting to blur the edges and we should stop encouraging them.
