What happened to our battle-worn skepticism of Bush scare tactics? Of course the House Republicans' counter-plan is no better than the Bailout, but I'm finding it extremely troubling that the Dems immediately believed the Bush admin's scare tactics, just like they did about weapons of mass destruction. Shouldn't we let the weapons inspectors do their job before invading a country?
How did everyone suddenly decide that great peril will come in a matter of days? Because the BUSH administration and the people who will gain from the bailout told us so, that seems to be about it. Yes, it's clear that some companies are going down, but what if it's just a few companies, what if the damage is bad but not as bad as putting us all a trillion more dollars in debt? So what if our 401k values go down for a while? That just means we're buying low! The market always recovers, maybe it needs a correction. I'm not saying this is all true but does anyone really know? Shouldn't we let the weapons inspectors do their job before invading a country?
Suddenly we're in a bizarro world with the Dems siding with Bush FOR a bailout, and the House Republicans siding with public opinion AGAINST a bailout.
Does anyone else see the problem here? If this bailout goes through and it doesn't work, guess who gets blamed? Bush is the Republicans' sacrificial lamb, and he's taking the Dems down with him!
The Republican brand was in a death spiral, and this could be their great turnaround, redeeming themselves in public opinion by standing up to Bush, like the Dems were never able to do successfully.
Side note: Did anyone notice that when the Dems were the minority in the Senate, it was considered the nuclear option to use a filibuster except in dire circumstances, but the Repubs have used it to block E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G like it's just standard practice, "you need 60 votes" has become the new rule!
So, here's Bush's great swan song of robbing the treasury and screwing the lower and middle class one last time, and the majority of my liberal brethren are drinking the Kool-Aid. I hope I'm wrong about this, and since my view is apparently in the minority, from what I've read on here so far, please, enlighten me on how this actually plays out differently.
