Virgil Goode is facing his toughest re-election campaign yet from Tom Perriello, a great Dem in the Wellstone mold who is running on convictions, not polling numbers. Goode is running his first attack ad of the cycle, predictably trying to paint his opponent as a scary (bearded?) New York liberal running in this traditionally red district. Here’s the charming ad:
You may remember Virgil Goode from his kind and coherent response to Rep. Keith Ellison’s election victory:
I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran.
Or you might know him from his striking oratory skills:
Or perhaps from his corruption. Or his penchant for blaming everything on "illegals" and their "anchor babies" or solving everything by drilling in ANWR.
Perriello, on the other hand, has real solutions for his district, including a plan for economic revitalization and green job creation. He was also one of the original sponsors of the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq and opposed telecom immunity. Perriello has a tough race ahead of him, but he’s doing all the right things. He has opened eight field offices and has made it onto the DCCC’s Red to Blue list. He’s on the air with ads highlighting his commitment to service and plans for the district, but the campaign needs cash. Check Tom out and consider making a donation. Van Hollen has called this the surprise Democratic pickup of the cycle, but Perriello needs our support to make it happen.
