Okay, I know mail to Capitol Hill is running 100 to 1 (or more) against the bailout. I also know Congressional leaders are telling us that, once we Americans become aware of the consequences, we'll change our minds and realize the bailout is necessary. So we're in the sad situation of choosing between rescuing the fatcats of Wall Street or being responsible for the economic apocalypse. How do you rationally make such a choice?
Well, I've decided to go with my gut, which is telling me to screw the fatcats, and the consequences be damned.
So I just bashed out a quick e-mail to my Congressman, Jose Serrano, of the Bronx's 16th Congressional District (the poorest CD in the country). Serrano is in no danger of losing his seat this time around. But I told him in no uncertain terms that if he supports the bailout, he will not get my vote in November. Has anyone else done the same thing to their representatives this weekend?
Text of my e-mail to Rep. Serrano:
Congressman Serrano,
I know this seems like a no-win situation. I know your Party leaders are telling you that you MUST support the bailout, or the economy will go down the tubes.
But I'm telling you that I'm angry that my money is going to be used to save the skins of the fatcats on Wall Street. I'm angry and so are my friends. I'm registered and intend to vote on Election Day. Obviously, since I'm an Obama supporter, you probably assume that you'll get my vote as well. But I assure you, if you vote in favor of the bailout, I will vote for your opponent, whoever that may be.
I realize you think you have a safe seat. But I also think you have no idea of how pissed off people are about this issue.
Do the right thing, and vote NO WALL STREET BAILOUT. If the market crashes and we have to rebuild our economy from the ground, then so be it. But I do not want Wall Street millionaires getting rescued with my money.
