Why I just left Kerry's mailing list

After many years of being a fan of John Kerry's, I just unsubscribed from his mailing list and sent a note that expressed my disappointment in him.

Why?  Take a look below the jump...

I am a former MA resident who supported Kerry since his days helping to end the Viet Nam war.  I was just a kid then but growing up in a college community I knew who he was and thought his fight against the war was heroic.

In 2003-04 I gave way more money than I could afford to his campaign, supporting him from day 1 all the way through the election.  Despite what I saw as inexplicable wimpiness regarding the Swift Boat Liars and the Ohio vote, I still supported him.  He got a raw deal from one tone-deaf attempt at a joke, but I still thought he could be a leader in the Senate.

Now I am just pissed.

The US economy is crumbling, corporate greed and outright lawlessness run roughshod over the average American, and we are facing the death throes of a  proto-fascist regime (pun intended) whose supporters are still viciously dangerous.  

And Kerry decides to choose someone who hobnobs with Robert Rubin and other Wall Street mavens who write his economic policy, votes for unfair trade agreements, and who sells himself as against the Iraq war but who even voted against Kerry's withdrawal proposal.

Well, fine, go ahead, but you just pissed away the last of my support for you, Senator Kerry.  In my book you are irrelevant.

THAT's why I took myself off Kerry's list.

    Since Gore is way to the left of Obama on every single issue.  Every. Single. One.

    So many Obama supporters are too young and too idolatrous to see how skillfully they have been suckered.  They don't talk about his policies, they just talk about Him, as if they would walk behind him with palm fronds if they could.  I used to work for public interest groups fighting Reagan and I saw many people in those movements turn into the same sort of politicos they purported to despise, and that is what happened with Obama.  If he really were the anti-war candidate he pretends to be, he would have voted against funding every single time.

    I support Edwards because of the policies he has laid out in great detail and his demonstrated willingness to stand up and fight for the working and middle classes here. I have no illusions that he is a perfect candidate and human being.

      2004 Edwards or 2008 Edwards?  Why do you believe him when his Senate record was less than stellar?  I look at what people have done in the past, not what they are telling me now.  Words are merely words.  How can you believe he will stand up and "fight"--because he has told you so?  Is that what you base your support on?  I'm too skeptical to take politicans at their word.  And by the way I'm 55, hardly "idolatrous".

I mean, I think he'd make a fine President, but he seems to be a pretty recent convert to the progressive cause. He used to be a pro-war, moderate southern Democrat, the last time I checked. Same deal with Gore, too, for that matter, though I think that his conversion was sincere.

      But Gore will do as he chooses and there's really no predicting what that will be.  I absolutely also get where you're coming from as someone who has been through the changes.  We are what we are, we've seen what we've seen and there is no changing that.  But I don't think it helps to demean Obama's supporters despite how completely obnoxious they've been hijacking your diary.  I have no idea whether they're young or idolatrous or naive or whatever and I guess it doesn't matter.  I know they do him no favors by this behavior and that the comments in your diary have been juvenile, disrespectful and petty.  You have every right to be pissed about that.

    I think you fundamentally misunderstand at least this Edwards supporter.  Ultimately I don't care who does or doesn't endorse John Edwards.  I'm with him for my own reasons and while I respect Gore tremendously his endorsement or lack thereof will have no bearing on my vote.

    God this cabal of bullies is really sickening.  If Obama supporters are so pumped on their candidate then why are they busy finding any diary and thread in which to insult and demean Edwards supporters?  It's just plain ugly.

    I'm not an Obama supporter.  I'm a supporter of Obama, Edwards, and Clinton.  I think any one of them would make a great President.  I'm just sick and tired of the weak ass shit that people present as somehow making one candidate or other the worst person ever to set foot on the planet.  Met Robert Rubin?  That's it.  That's what makes Obama so terrible that having Kerry endorse him makes Kerry "irrelevant".  The truth is there isn't much that separates these candidates.  The people who believe the Edwards (or Obama or Clinton) is the One True Candidate who will solve all the problems are delusional.  That's the delusional thinking, not the people who are tired of the weak bullshit attacks and purity trolling that isn't even about anything.  If Obama, Edwards, and Clinton with their liberal voting records aren't pure enough to be our nominee, then who will be?

        It's really interesting to read these diaries by the hyperpartisans of Edwards, Obama, or Clinton.  It's as if they need to think that the other two are the worst people in the world in order to justify their level of investment in their favored candidate.  But people don't want to believe that they are irrational, so they latch onto these nebulous "reasons" for why the other two are so terrible.  And then they feel the need to write diaries to tell everyone about how their candidate is the greatest thing since sliced bread and how the other two are so terrible because of X and Y even though X and Y are really stupid things.  I shake my head in disbelief about 10 times a day reading DKos these days.

          Upon returning, the site looks like a caricature. So much drama. The good part about taking time off though, is that it makes it much easier to retain perspective through all the sillyness. No matter how many diaries are written per day, the collective effect in the Real World remains slightly above zero. In the end, you've still got to put boots on the ground and talk to people to produce real change. Hence my sig. Unfortunately, I don't think this is something most folks will understand until they choose to take some of that time off.

  he made this choice.  That being said, it's up to him who to support and I don't hold it against him in any way.  If he shares my info with Barack's campaign, that's okay with me, cause I plan to support him if he is the nominee.  Either way, my head is nowhere near exploding over that, or whoever Gore endorses.  I believe in John Edwards because I have studied all of the candidates and I like his positions on the issues the best.  No matter who endorses any other candidate, that is highly unlikely to sway my personal opinion.  In the end, the constant sniping from Obama supporters, you know who you are, has become so divisive, my head feels like exploding.  Please, just stop.

    That it was anti-Clinton more than pro-Obama.  But I am still very disappointed.  I would prefer he just stay out of it and let us decide for a change.

    I would hold my nose and vote for Clinton, and I would vote with slightly less distaste for Obama, but I really fear the Mighty Wurlitzer would eat both of them alive.

    I use the analogy of cops vs. drug dealers.  Cops have limited weaponry and generally work to uphold the law and some take it very seriously.  So, for example, they don't spray a crowd with bullets just to get one guy.  Drug dealers, on the other hand, have military grade weaponry and are sociopaths, and will do just about anything to save their own ass, bolster their machismo, and enrich themselves.  Well, Dems are the cops and Repiglicans are the drug dealers.  Happy talk is not going to cut it against an AK47.

  but idealogically he's always been closer to Obama and Clinton.  Since you're from here you know he's not particularly well liked.  He's been a decent enough senator but has never inspired deep passion.  He's the good enough senator.  I think he's done some good things in the Senate but he's never been and never will be Ted.  He has a right to choose who he endorses and apparently I have yet another disappointment to live through with him.  He never was and never will be a good match for John Edwards so I don't think it's any great loss.  And it just reinforces what the pols around here have said about him forever.
