I  would very much like to know what might be contained within a diary that now has 1200 comments appended to it.  

And the temptation is great just to click away & see what all the fuss is about.

But I know my old computer Betsy pretty well and she's not going to react well to a click into that comments well.

So those of you on shiny machines, can you give a summary of the reaction?

    You'll see his diary and some links below it.
    [click] on the one that says "Permalink"
    That will take you here, to a diary with NO COMMENTS!

    The permalink option is a good thing to remember when you see a lot of comments.  It will give you just the diary.

    click on diarist's name, which takes you to their user profile.  Click on the diary and up it comes with no comments.  There is a "see comments" button to click if you want to go into the thread.

      Whatever you do, don't click on 'Discuss' or 'There's more', or any diary on the right column of the Home Page.

      There's also the 'Diaries' option at the upper right of the Home Page, under 'Menu'. Open this in a new tab (or window), and you can scroll through all recent diaries' 'above the fold', in order to read a bit to determine whether you're interested enough to click, and you'll also see how many comments there are, to determine whether to click on 'There's more' or 'Permalink'.

    •  You can also set the default to no comments. Open

      a diary with just a few, and at the end of the diary and top of the comments are several choices. Toggle "hide" and "always" and diaries will always open without comments. A click on comments will load just the ones you want.

    ...have still not figured this out.

    Even easier, click on "permalink" when you click to load a diary or a FP story,  C+P free.

    and of course, load it into a new tab, as is offered in  the right click menu.  Set your options/preferences to not go to the new tab automatically, so you can keep on reading where you are uuntil the page has fully loaded into the new tab.  The status of the load is indicated on the tab bar, so you can tell with a flick of yr eye if it has finished.  

    I usually run down the diary list and open what looks interesting in new tabs, as many as I want, and then get to cruise them, all the while still having the DK FP available without reload, hanging out in the original tab.

    I've visited DKos using Safari, IE, Netscape and Firefox, and Firefox seems to be the best for it.  Daily Kos is an enormously complex and kludged together package of software on its last legs (a new version has been [allegedly] in the works for a year or more) and will crash any browser now and then.

    We take this site for granted, but few realise how bold and ambitious it is to try to do something like this on the shoestring it started out with.  DKos has always been occaisonally problematic. It's that complexity/chaos thang, don't ya know?

      not following my own excellent advice, blithely opened the KO thread when it had over 1300 comments, just to see. It did eventually open (I'm on hi speed), but not completely, and soon the browser popped up a window and asked if it couple please stop trying to download the page or it would have a nervous breakdown.  Firefox is nice that way, doesn't scold you with minor chords and gongs and crap.

  As far as the comments go... They're all pretty much the "you rock!" variety with a lot of "Tweety sucks" and "How could you not have a favorite candidate" thrown in. (Mostly it's just the "you rock!" comments though.)

  I do believe that Keith might have set a record for recs in any tip jar and especially a tip jar for a first time diarist... 925 recommends and counting.

  His other comment has 619 recommends at present, so that might be a record too.

  (You might not want to click on his comment links though because they both have a ton of replies and might take your computer awhile to load.)

  I don't watch Olberman only because he's not on my basic satelite package and my satelite bill is included in  my rent so I haven't added to it. So I haven't actually seen his show so everything I hear about him is second hand. He sounds like an okay guy, but I don't think he's really deserving of all the hero worship he tends to get. But then again I think the cult of celebrity thing is one of the main things wrong with humanity in general and America in paticular.

      for the most part as well. But I didn't fawn over him when I met him in person at the Oregon Country Fair back in the 80's, I treated him just like I would anyone else.

      The same goes for when  Cliff Robertson when came into the software store I was working at. But when my manager came out and saw who I was waiting on he went nuts practiclly drooling on him, asking for an autograph and all that kind of thing. And that seems to be what a majority of the posts on Olberman's diary seems to be. Not people trying to engage in a conversation with an equal but basically a bunch of gushing and fawning over a celebrity.

      I have nothing against Keith. In fact even though I've only had limited exposure to him I think he does good work. It's just that I don't understand why people would willingly embarass or degrade (maybe not the best choice of words but as close as I can get without my thesaurus handy) themselves just because a person's a celebrity. Of course with over a thousand comments on his diary I couldn't go through all of them, but a good percentage of them seemed to be just that.

        Mine was not particularly substantive either, although I did go back and reply to myself (to stay out of the blow-up loading situation) and asked him to please

        make some really special comments about the lame duck and his flock shitting up our pond till the water is not drinkable.
