SC Poll: Nearly 40% Repugs undecided

Wed Jan 16, 2008 at 11:43:47 PM PDT

Has to be quick. I'm going to bed.
New Clemson University poll of Republicans, done Jan 9-15, nearly 40 percent of respondents said they're not sure who they'll support in Saturday's SC Republican primary.
24 percent say they may make up their minds within the last 24 hours. (Good luck polling this one.)
Of those expressing a preference:

McCain: 29 percent
Huckabee: 21 percent
Romney: 13 percent
Thompson: 10 percent

Full story at the Greenville News:
http://greenvilleonline.com/...

Interviewed 450 voters, margin of error 4.6 percent.

The Greenville News, yet again, feels moved to point out that at 10 percent, with Romney at 13 percent, FredO is in a statistical dead heat for 3rd place! (God, they love FredO at the Greenville News.)

FredO promised a crowd yesterday in Simpsonville that his two children, I believe ages 2 and 4, would be joining him on the campaign trail today and added that "Somewhere, Strom Thurmond was smiling."

I swear, FredO said that. I guess Republicans think it's cool for a really old man to father children with a really young, pretty, busty blonde. Do not ask me why.

My personal contact report from candidates:

People knocking on my door in Greenville: 3 (2 for Ron Paul, 1 for FredO)

Flyers left on my car or front door: 2 (both for Ron Paul)

Mailed to my houses: 1 from John McCain, explaining that he didn't have a baby with a black woman, adopted an Indian orphan instead.

Phone calls: 1 from Hillary, 3 from Edwards, 1 push-poll yesterday trying to get me to like Huckabee. (No luck there.)

Yard signs: I don't think there's a single one in my neighborhood, which is definitely unusual. Yard signs around Greenville: Ron Paul is everywhere. Kind of scary. Still a decided lack of interest in Republican candidates.

Greenville News endorses: John McCain.

SC Governor endorses: No one, as kind of explained yesterday in an odd column in the Greenville News saying...it was historic to have Obama in the race.

A rare event. I'm sure everyone on the campaign trail was so happy to get here after Iowa and NH, and the weather was great earlier in the week.
    In the 60s and sunny.
And Wednesday night, it started snowing, supposed to have ice by morning in the upstate north of I-85.

South Carolina Republicans are incapable of independent thought. In the old days, Carol Campbell, Bob Jones and Strom Thurmond would tell them who to vote for and they obeyed. Now the establishment itself is split leaving their zombies to wander around aimlessly like a toddler with a soiled diaper. It's kind of sad.

  •  I wouldn't read much into the Clemson poll (0+ / 0-)

Their undecided rate is always much higher than other polls.  In November, they had the Dem race as 19-17-12, which are the lowest marks for Clinton and Obama since July.

  •  Go Thompson! (2+ / 0-)

It'd be funny to see the wingnuts have to go into Super Tuesday with absolutely no idea who to vote for.

  •  Zogby's latest numbers are just out (3+ / 0-)

    Zogby

Arizona Sen. John McCain kept his lead in South Carolina in the second installment of the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby tracking poll. He is followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, just as he was in the survey released yesterday. Their levels of support have remained static, with McCain holding steady at 29% and Huckabee losing just a point to stand at 22%.

There have been shifts lower down, however. Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson has ousted former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney from the number three spot. Romney, who won the Michigan primary Tuesday, dropped a point, from 13% support to 12%, while Thompson jumped two points to 14%.

Pollster John Zogby: "There was no discernible bump for Romney coming out of Michigan. We are also seeing that any pickup for Fred Thompson hurts Mike Huckabee in this race, which is as close as any we have seen. Sen. John McCain is in a good position to win, but he has to close the deal against a surging Romney.

"McCain is getting a good share of evangelicals and Thompson is doing very well among very conservative voters. Will Thompson help McCain win? Will Romney get his bounce from Michigan and help McCain go down to defeat? We are waiting to see."

  •  interesting results (0+ / 0-)

I thought SC was perfect for ol' Fred to make a comeback. He should pack up the campaign if he doesn't win there.

  •  Yes, but it's snowing here, so I can forget (0+ / 0-)

about politics for a day! There's nearly two inches out there! All right, not that exciting, except maybe for the neighbor's cat, who's running around this morning loudly meowing at anyone who will listen.
