The experience that brought me to John Edwards

Wed Jan 02, 2008 at 02:07:40 PM PDT

We all know how cold it is in Iowa. How cold it is in America, in these trying days. Well I had an experience that was chilling to the core I thought I should share, that has brought me over to Edwards.

I've always been a staunch Obama supporter, but something happened to me today. In the start of winter in the relatively mild Alabama, it was time for me ot pay my water and gas bills. It is a time I dread every month as I pull out my checkbook and try to get the money in on time. On this day I handle my bills on an all too short break from work. Luckily there is a post box at the front of the office park.

As I pull up, bills in hand, I roll down my window to pay those bills by dropping them in the box. I immediately feel the chill. The harsh cold of Winter. Usually mild in Alabama. But this day is different. The wind pierces at my very skin, as I reach from my small car to try and deposit my mail. But something occurs. One envelope falls in and another flies out of my hand. I don't see where it went. Worse, I don't know which one it was. Would I face the prospect of no water in the middle of a drought, or no heat in the middle of a cold spike?

My only recourse was to get out of my car and search among the vast business park, icy air piercing through my clothes, the one day I forgot a jacket. I give myself a spiraling search pattern to try to hit every location my letter could have landed, but am afraid the wind would move it much too fast. As I look, I'm surrounded by industry and corporation. As I walk, I feel the chill air hit me. Is it the winter or is it the corporations, I think. And then I think about Iowa, and how cold it is there, both literally and figuratively.

And the one guy out in that cold, fighting it. John Edwards out in the cold on his 36 hour marathon, fighting not just the Iowa cold, but the cold of the uncaring corporations. The same corporations that would cut either my water or gas, depending on if I could find the bill before the Postal Service arrived to pick up mail, regardless of any good explanation. I felt the cold of winter, and knew John Edwards was fighting it. Edwards was the only candidate who ever said anything about how corporations are bad. And he was also the only one who had ever been cold before, like me. And both of those things are things that I agree with. It was all so simple.

As I thought about the election more, all the similarities John Edwards had to my ideal candidate shone brightly. John Edwards dad worked in a mill. My father always liked cereal from General Mills. John Edwards has a southern accent, just like me. Most importantly John Edwards is the only person in the entire world brave enough to take extremely popular policy positions when running for a primary. So now I know who I must support. John Edwards, he truly is the son of God.

You know, one of them literary devices.

  •  Interesting but nasty snark (7+ / 0-)

    You say Edwards is

the only person in the entire world brave enough to take extremely popular policy positions when running for a primary

What you forgot to mention is that he made them popular.  No one else had a UHC when they started their campaigns.  No one else had a clear plan to get out of Iraq.  No one else talked about poverty.

One was all about hope and the other was in to win.  Edwards was about lifting the lives of ordinary Americans.

    •  You think he'll get us out of Iraq? (0+ / 0-)

... sorry, that ivory tower bullcrap won't stand up to the amount of bribes people can dump into congress.

    •  A number of your claims there are false. (0+ / 0-)

Two of them, at least. The "no one had a clear plan for getting out of Iraq, and no one was talking about poverty" when they started their campaigns. I know Obama had been involved in those heavily before starting his campaign.

Also when you say "no one" you are completely discounting Kucinich of course, who definitely had plans for getting out of Iraq, for UHC, and poverty. Richardson has had extensive plans on poverty and health care. Biden has had extensive plans on Iraq, though not exactly as "getting out of" as many would like. Edwards has effectively taken up many progressive causes, but don't pretend he(or any of the other candidates) invented them.

in that post I say Obama had been involved in those heavily before the campaign. I meant specifically poverty and an Iraq war plan. I don't think he had a fully fleshed out UHC plan at that point.

      •  Obama is so committed to getting out of Iraq (1+ / 0-)

that do you know how many Iraq funding bills he filibustered and raised a hell about?  Zero.

Obama is so committed to end poverty that you barely hear the word poverty out of his mouth on the campaign trail.

But I'm sure when sits down with the power interests across from the table and tells them that The President requests that they give up some of their power, they will be happy to oblige.

Obama's poverty plans are actually rather extensive and specific, it just is not something that is picked up by the media much.

          •  Oh yeah, he's got plans (0+ / 0-)

but you can tell how important he thinks the issue is by counting how often he talks about it and whether he makes it a campaign issue.  Having plans written down on your website means nothing if you don't give it any visibility as a candidate. And here is something very telling from Obama's own webpage that you linked to:

"I'm in this race for the same reason that I fought for jobs for the jobless and hope for the hopeless on the streets of Chicago; for the same reason I fought for justice and equality as a civil rights lawyer; for the same reason that I fought for Illinois families for over a decade... That's why I'm running, Democrats — to keep the American Dream alive for those who still hunger for opportunity, who still thirst for equality."

               — Barack Obama, Speech in Des Moines, IA, November 10, 2007

Great quote, but how many times is the word "poor" or "poverty" mentioned in the best quote his own campaign can find to put on his - you know - poverty issues page?  Zero.  This is what I'm talking about.

And it was horrible. I was walking around for 15 minutes with no coat, wind blowing every which way trying to find that bill.

Luckily I did, it was the gas bill. And it DID make me think of how cold Iowa must be, if I'm freezing down here in moderate-land.
