What if Edwards pulls ahead on super-Tuesday?

Right now the front runners are studiously ignoring Edwards, as though he were some mildly annoying younger brother.    But he will probably do well in the upcoming red state and swing state primaries.   So ...

Expect to see those gun turrets swinging slowly around to focus him in their sights.  

Maybe this will give us a chance to see the Obama/Clinton thing with fresh eyes.   Like the Middle East, these two have been fighting so long we've all forgotten who started it.  But with Edwards, we can ask:  

1. Who attacks first?

2. How nasty is the attack?

It will also be interesting to see what his closet skeletons and weak points are.     Should be a wild ride, if events to date are any indication.

    South Carolina is NOT key for Edwards.    That's a myth created by pundits who are either spinning on purpose, or just misinformed about the electorate.  

    Where Edwards "needs" to do well is the midwest and the non-coastal west.   There his rural populist message will resonate well, and the democratic base is conservative.   In many of those states he's already beating the republican nominee in head-to-head polls.

        BUT ...   Edwards' case is a little different.  The groups that back the "presumed winner" tend to be those groups -- lobbyists and corporate PACs -- that want to make sure they've bought and paid for the winner in advance.

        John doesn't take money from those groups, so ... not sure it has the same power over his campaign that it would have over an ordinary campaign.

  I am hopeful, but the odds are very long.  The reality is no one has a chance when the corporate media ia against you.  Edwards needed to win Iowa to have a realistic shot.  He lost.  He virutally needs a miracle now.  However, he might be happy to collect delegates and be a peacemeaker or kingmaker at the convention.

  John will most likely do well, and possibly the plain states like Missouri.. but if he wants to really do some damage, he must STRONGLY do well in California.. at least hamstring Barack and Hill.. his goal should be finish at 25% if the vote or better.. if he can tie up Cali he has a great shot of getting back into this thing as long as he gets a few wins on SDM Tuesday.

  As for Barack, if he wins half or more of the contests on Tuesday, he will most likely be the leader of our party.

  As for Hill, if she wins Cali, look out.. she may be impossible to stop since she will obviously win NY and most likely will win many of the Northeast states unless Barack or John make a tough stand against her in NJ or Massachusetts.

    But John's got good chances in these states:

    Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virgina, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico.

    That's a lot of delegates.  

    He would've done great in Florida and Michigan too, but we won't get to hear from them this year.

        Sorry, that sounds terrible and I actually like living in CA for the most part.  But no place is perfect ...

        I once had a southern accent (thirty years ago) and I got really sick of the snickering and people asking me "Where are YOU from?"  So I got rid of the accent.   Everyone  out here from the South does that.

        Not unlike being black or a woman (in quality, not degree), but a lot easier to fix.

          Most of theses polls are based on 3 or 4 day rolling averages.  You are just now steeing the effect of the debate the other night.  Look at Clemson's poll with Edwards at 20% and Zogby with 19%.  If he polls well today then those numbers will jump by around4 points tomorrow.

            I find it troubling though, that this site gives head-to-head match ups that don't include John Edwards.

            What a rip.    The one place John consistently beats his Dem opponents is the one area that pollsters are not covering very well.  

            And what's really smelly about this, is that some of these sites show Clinton and Obama against all four leading Repubs ... meaning Guiliani is being represented in the h2h polls, but not Edwards?   Something is rotten.

            I'll have to become a pest on that web site (as I already have on Rasmussen and CNN) for not covering John in the h2h polls.

                      I'm an Edwards supporter on the grounds of electability.  But your question is a good one:   If I may paraphrase, it is:  "Why do the Edwards people whine about about being ignored by the media and the polls?   Why aren't they doing something about it?"  

                      To be completely honest, what Edwards may be weak on is the ability to strong-arm, wheedle, cajol, compromise, and generally politic-it-up.   Jimmy Carter had that problem.   He was brilliant, committed, populist, idealistic.  But ultimately he was faulted for not being good at Washington politics.  He campaigned and was elected on being an outsider, but ultimately "failed" because he wasn't an insider.    

                      Most likely this ability that John may lack is Hillary's greatest strength.  Unfortunately it's also her greatest weakness, among the anti-establishment party base anyway.
