Highest Ranking Latino Dem Endorsing Obama

Senator Barack Obama also gets another big endorsement which should
help with Latinos in California...

The announcements also come on a weekend when the House's highest-ranking Latino, California Rep. Xavier Becerra, also announced that he is backing Obama.

The Kennedy endorsement could also give Obama a lift among Hispanic voters, thanks to Kennedy's high profile on immigration legislation. The Obama campaign, which lags far behind Clinton among Hispanic voters, according to national polls, will be expectedly to prominently display the endorsements by both Kennedys in Latino communities.

Representative Becerra is a very popular and powerful figure in Southern California and within the Democratic House caucus and will act as a good counterforce to Clinton backer L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.  Combined with the Kennedy endorsement, it looks like the Latino vote will be much more competitive than it seemed just days ago.  Also chalk up another superdelegate for Senator Obama.

    My wife and I were phonebanking for Obama yesterday at the Working People's Law Center in Echo Park, and I was talking with a Becerra staffer, and both of us were wondering if he'd endorse.

    This helps A LOT in my district. Now Eric Garcetti, who is our popular city councilman (and head of the LA City Council), and Xavier Becerra, our very progressive congressman, have both endorsed Obama.

    I meet a lot of older Latinos that are a bit on the fence, but lean Clinton as a natural reaction to Bush. I think they are reluctant to embrace the new, untried option. Having all of Becerra, Garcetti and Linda Sanchez on board should really help in our central city recruitment efforts.

        I signed up a few weeks back at 3333 Wilshire, and I was assignend a precinct in Atwater, though I live in the Elysian Heights area of Echo Park.

        There were about 15-20 of us captains phonebanking at the little law center yesterday. My wife and I have been trying to phone at least 100 folks a day. We'd canvas, but it's pouring rain this week (as you know) in LA.

  I really don't get what is said to be the big Latino support of Clinton... not for the life of me. I know the media tries to dredge it up as a "black vs. brown" race issue, but I just don't see it having lived in a largely Latino area for much of my life. Maybe it's a ploy to get the Latino vote??? I say it's bull.

    It's not about race but perceptions of experience. Hillary benefits from being Bill's wife and Latinos strongly supported Bill. Among other reasons, he directed the INS to greatly accelerate processing of citizenship applications in 1996, which not only helped register a lot of Latino voters, but helped a lot of Latinos become citizens period. As a result they feel they can trust Hillary, whereas Obama is an unknown.

        I don't think a stance on a single issue is going to do it. Many Latinos see Hillary, and not without justification, as the most qualified advocate for their needs. Obama has a big uphill battle to reclaim some of that territory. He can surely accomplish it, but it isn't going to be easy.

          When she was pressed on the New York plan to issue drivers licenses to the undocumented, she caved.  When Obama was asked the same question, without hesitation he said yes he supported the plan. Watch for that debate clip in ads targeted to the southwest US.  If you are still have doubts, look at what Ahnold's veto of a similar plan did for his popularity among hispanics in California.

    but it's still an uphill climb, and not worth putting all eggs in one basket. Plus, winning some red states might be more beneficial to Obama, because it shows he has appeal in places Democrats haven't done so well in the past. We already know we can win California in a general - but when Democratic turnout surges in places like South Carolina and Obama wins record numbers of votes, that shows that he his appeal stretches beyond traditionally Democratic groups.

            ...is a Republican KILLER if there ever was one.  Kansas is about as red of a red state as exists, and she won her 2nd term ('06) with 58% percent of the vote.  

            I wrote in some previous comments somewhere (I think on Kos) that she'll be the first female US president or VP. She's mega popular around these parts.  

            While I'm not predicting it, I wouldn't be remotely surpised if Obama picked her for VP.  Not sure if she's what makes sense there electorally given all the dynamics involved, but she's WAY strong.  If Edwards could've got the Dem nod, she would have been a near perfect pick from an electoral standpoint.
