FCC fines ABC $1.43 MILLION

Sun Jan 27, 2008 at 01:57:50 PM PDT

According to the AP, the FCC has leveled a 1.43 million dollar fine at ABC over a five year old episode of NYPD Blue.  What could possibly be so awful, so indecent, as to warrant a fine so hefty?

That's right.  A woman's bare ass.

I hate the FCC with a passion.  I fail to understand it's continued existence.  Since the '90's, every television sold in the United States, by law has been fitted with a V-Chip.  Therefore every parent in America has no one to blame but themselves if their children see something they find objectionable.  I also find it ironic that the very people who complain about these things are usually the ownership society Republicans.

Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate said Friday's action puts broadcasters on notice.

"Our action today should serve as a reminder to all broadcasters that Congress and American families continue to be concerned about protecting children from harmful material and that the FCC will enforce the laws of the land vigilantly,"

"We find that the programming at issue is within the scope of our indecency definition because it depicts sexual organs and excretory organs -- specifically an adult woman's buttocks," the FCC wrote.

Hey, Deborah Taylor Tate, go fuck yourself.  I refuse to believe that a naked backside does any child anywhere any harm.  I've seen PG movies with backsides in them.  Get a fucking grip.

Would this be less offensive?

She is wearing something on her butt, after all.

How about this?

Shit, I see that all the time on network TV.  What makes that less indecent that no thong at all?  Please, Deborah Taylor Tate, explain it to me.

What compounds my anger, however, is that this episode aired five years ago.  Does anybody even remember it?  Is anybody still offended?

And can somebody please tell me why nudity is such a taboo in this country, especially something as innocuous as buttocks, while we continue to peddle the most violent programming in the world?  Why are our priorities so fucked?

And how does the FCC arrive at the 1.43 million figure?  It is the maximum fine allowed, according to the article.  ABC was fined for each individual station that carried the episode.  But why 1.43 million?  Is that by the cheek, or by the minute?

Fuck the FCC.
