Obama: 500,000 Donors Strong Heading into Iowa

It's just a few hours until Obama supporters in Iowa head into their local caucuses.

When they do, they will know that a nationwide movement of 500,000 people across the country who have taken ownership of this campaign is behind them.

Just wanted to thank those of you in this community who have taken the leap to be a part of this. This unprecedented number shows just how strong the grassroots support is across the country and how many people are ready to take the political process back. (You can follow the live count on BarackObama.com.)

One more thing: in the spirit of Obama the organizer, we hit the goal with donors who had given before promising to match another Obama supporter's first-time donation. The two supporters get a chance to exchange messages and even share their email addresses with one another if they choose in order to continue the conversation.

       We have many socially liberal, "Independent" voters in our crucial Tampa Bay area waiting proudly to vote for Obama in the general election, including my National Guard Staff Sgt. son.  Many registered  "Indy" or are disenfranchised because they despised the Clinton and Bush administrations for their devisiveness and their corporate/MIC ties.  We are Fired Up and Obama will be a wonderful President.

  •  Ideology

    ...takes over this site sometimes.  Obama would be a massive improvement over anything the Republicans can offer.  He's not the most liberal Democrat, but he's very far from being the most conservative one.  His positions are similar to the other leading candidates.  He has 500,000 individual donors.  He's not willing to unilaterally disarm when it comes to other revenue sources.  He flips Republicans and independents.  He taps into social networks most Democratic candidates don't think of tapping.  He's got as thick a coat of teflon as any Democrat I've seen in years.  He's extremely intelligent.  He is one of the most gifted orators we've had since Lincoln, and like Lincoln, he writes them himself.

    And yet we can't seem to stop figuring out imaginative ways to label him as an insubstantial corporate shill.  We have idiots picketing in his office on Iraq because they don't like some nuance of his position, when he was the only major candidate who was actually right on Iraq from the beginning.  We have the most hostile rhetoric tossed his way, constantly.  

    And yet it doesn't seem to stick.  Should he win tonight, we may be in for a very interesting 2008.

    •  I've been thinking that there may be

      a lot of that going on.  An Iowa friend remained undecided for a long time, finally saying she "leaned" Obama, but then after her grown children visited over Christmas she announced that she would definately caucus for Obama.  She said they convinced her that she should support the candidate for this generation, the candidate of the 21st century.  And then I started to watch Obama's crowds and I noticed quite a few instances where it looked like the older generation/younger generation in a family were sitting side by side.  I think there's been quite a bit of listening going on.

    Obama simply does not elicit fear in those white voters necessary to win this election.  And the Republicans dare not play the race card, because Obama will throw that right back in their face - he has the eloquence, the white Kansan roots, and the attitude to turn that around and beat the Republicans with it.  

    Those few white voters who won't vote for a black man because of his race?  They can all f*&k themselves.

  What it means to be a part of this 500,000-strong movement for change is not that we're united by the fact that we donated money. It means that 499,999+ other people believe, with the same conviction you do, that this country is ready to take its first step in the right direction since 2000.

•  just a quick footnote

  when the Obama campaign puts up a number of supporters, it includes everyone who has bought a t-shirt or attended a ticketed event.  This is different than how campaigns have accounted for "supporters" in the past and different from all of the current campaigns.  I'm not saying it isn't a big number to be proud of, but any comparisons is -- as I've said before -- apples to brussel sprouts.
