It's here. The front that has been pounding the midwest is right on our doorstep. We're under a wind advisory and a tornado watch with a line of storms on our county border. Outside it looks like it should be snowing, but at 60 degrees that's just not going to happen.
After dealing with last night's case of "trickle-down incompetence" via a poorly installed Sears water heater, my crazy barn pootie decided that sleep was not an option for me. So, I'll be going back to bed again soon...although with the weather radio going off every hour or so, I doubt I'll get much sleep.

My 3rd grader just does not get numbers and they are threatening to hold her back a grade. I asked her last night how she likes to work with them- either the number line or the grid- and she said the grid. She's otherwise pretty bright- a fantastic memory- but math has always vexed her. The tests are coming up in 6 weeks and we're (mom and dad) nervous.

believe me I know- I am an architect. My life is nothing if not numbers. Agreed- we just need to get her to do more. Cripes she is good with music so I know the aptitude is there- we just have to tap into it. We will check out "Real Math"- thanks.
by NYFM on Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 06:11:20 AM PDT
I suggest solid objects. 5 blocks take away 2 blocks equals three blocks. are you sure she actually knows what amounts the numbers signify? start with that.
once she is solid on "7" equals 7 items, try using slips of paper for teaching addition and subtraction. individual slips of paper for the digits in the ones column. ten slips of the same paper in a rubber band for the digit in the tens column. ten packs of ten slips in a bigger rubber band for the hundreds column. That may get her to understand what it means to "carry the 1" in addition, or add ten to a column for subtraction.
it works for division and multiplication too. if she is visually oriented rather than an abstract thinker this may help her.
I had a math block until 4th grade and then suddenly "got it" and became an insatiable math prodigy. Don;t give up.
Politics is like driving. To go backward, put it in R. To go forward, put it in D.

I grew up on them and it is certainly a way to visualize the numbers, and help see the logic and order. And I am the same as you. I just did not get long division until one day it came to me- in 5th grade! After first being exposed to it in 4th!
by NYFM on Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 06:16:34 AM PDT

This woman Deborah Simmons, the paper's Editorial Page Editor, is talking up Romney??? She says that it's "obvious" that Romney has "the best overall economic policy plan, even if you don't look at what he did in Massachusetts and bicker over it, as they did in last night's debate."
Maybe we really are getting to the end of race steroetyping. Ms. Simmons is a dreadlocked, dark-skinned lady. Obviously she is a capable professional, but I find it hard to believe that anyone could know what would "obviously" be a best overall plan for the economy. The economy is just too big and complex for anyone to be able to know that one plan would "obviously" be best, IMO.
Anyway... Good Morning all!

If the blast doesn't actually break your skull or cause flow of blood, then it is "mild."
How wonderful.
New England Journal of Medicine says 1 in 6 returning Iraq vets hit with concussions. The "mild" rating is one helluva hoot.
experts worry may be causing a host of undiagnosed neurological deficiencies.
The new report found that soldiers who had concussions were more likely than those with other injuries to report:
-- headaches, poor sleep and balance problems
-- stress disorder, or PTSD
-- irritability, sleep problems and flashbacks.
No wonder, the family problems that have become the epidemic of service communities.
BTW: From experience: there's no such thing as a "mild" blast concussion.
This whole spin/tweak/lie is bullsh*t.
The Pentagon put the troops in the 6,800-pound Humvee-jeeps. That for contractor $$$$$, where we have had 4,500 M-113 full-armor M113 Armored Personnel Carrier vehicles (at 26,000-pounds before sand bagging the floor) to match what Israel uses.
70% of casualties == the Humvee-jeep toll.
So now they gotta lie about what is happening. The doctors go along with the preferred terminology, but at least they get the core facts out.

All the Democratic nominee needs to do is to carry the same states that Kerry did, plus Ohio, which went Democratic in the last (2006) election. Or Virginia plus one of the other states we could carry: Missouri, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico, and Nevada. Or Missouri plus Colorado. Or Arkansas, Iowa, and New Mexico. Or Colorado plus any two others. And, except for 527s (BIG exception), the Republicans are BROKE.
