The big commenters: December

Each month, plf515 does a diary on all Daily Kos users he can find that have made at least 1000 comments in the previous month. Right now, he's working on the full-year results for 2007, so he's let me play in his sandbox for the month of December.

For those who want to check your own results, just substitute your own username for mine in the URL to check your December comments and your 2007 comments. You can find the table over the jump. If you think I've omitted anyone who made more than 1000 comments in December, please let me know in comments below.

The table columns are user name, user ID, December comments, November comments, October comments, comments for the past three months (adding October, November, and December totals), and YTD is the total number of comments made in 2007.

Final notes: the December data reflects all comments made to diaries published in December, not all comments actually posted in December. Using the diaries is a far quicker and more consistent way of measuring, and likely omits as many comments actually made on December 1 as it does include those on January 1.

December data and YTD data was obtained on January 3 in the afternoon. Because of the overlapping indices used by Search, comments made in the 21 days leading up to January 3 can be indexed more than once. Search counts each of these duplicates, but will only ever display a single instance. (If you've ever wondered why when you ask for 30 per page in a search you sometimes only see 24, it's because of these overlaps—your search had six duplicate entries that weren't displayed in that particular group of 30.)

There was a noticeable increase—approximately 20%—between preliminary December figures I obtained on January 1 and a rerun with several additional names discovered in the subsequent two days. The need for consistent data is why I went with the January 3 numbers, even though they've been inflated—the inflation appears reasonably consistent. I rechecked a few users today, and their December results had increased once again.

Since we're outside the 21-day overlap window for October and November, the numbers for those months have been redone for people who had been on those lists. They'll be a bit lower than you remember from prior editions.

    actually, you probably could do that by getting nrecs and creating an average recommend rate for that commenter for that month.

    but that sounds like hella work. i, for one, would pass on that.

      And I also have to wonder what percentage of those comments are truly substantive and thought out, as opposed to quick one-liners.  I know that I've boosted my comment counts significantly over the past few months (but still nowhere close to get on this list) by writing a lot more short comments that take under a minute to compose.

      Averaging >33 comments per day is just staggering to me.

      Now, if there was some way to easily compile total word counts for commenters, this list might look a lot different.  Then again, maybe it wouldn't.

  I only 235 comments and 16 diaries in 2007. When you have your own blog, I guess that's where your focus is. But 20,000+???? Where do ya get the time??

    Of course, in a diary which celebrates people who make at least 1000 comments in a month, we ought to have 1000 comments in the diary just for symmetry. It looks like 2008 won't be a symmetrical year unless people work much harder... :)
