Sounds shocking? After all, these people are just good people with whom we have a disagreement, a small disagreement. They aren't evil. But it shouldn't be a surprise.
Explanation: Crazy religious fanatics in California have, for the third time, put on the ballot a measure to force vulnerable, pregnant teenagers to notify their parents before they can undergo an abortion. This time, it appears that this malevolent measure might well pass.
A new Field Poll in California shows that it's leading with 49 to 41%. It has been defeated twice before, but not when it was on the same ballot as the presidential race.
What's worse, the same poll shows that proffering the argument that pregnant teens would risk serious injury or death because they are too scared to tell their parents would make 18% of people MORE LIKELY to support this initiative. I repeat, the argument that Proposition 4 would endanger pregnant teenage girls to death or injury makes 18% of people MORE LIKELY to vote for it. Sounds outlandish? Would the people who label themselves 'pro-life' actively push for policies that cause death and injury for the most vulnerable among us, pregnant teenage girls? Unfortunately, they would. From the poll:
Opponents say that mandatory parental notification laws put teens in real danger because scared, pregnant teens who feel they can't go to their parents do things that can risk serious injury and sometimes death
More likely to vote for Prop. 4 18%
No effect 62%
Less likely to vote for Prop. 4 20%

Now, not everyone who supports this initiative is evil, but I think it's clear that its most fanatical proponents are. It is incumbent upon us to educate people about this proposition and to shave off the support among decent people that it might have.
