Projection: Taking your weakness, and projecting it onto your opponent.
It's a classic move straight out of the Rove playbook.
Except, it's not going to work this time.
This just up on CNN's Political Ticker:
RNC to seek audit of all contributions to Obama campaign
It's pretty apparent that the GOP is in full panic mode:
The RNC announced that it plans to file a complaint with the Federal Election Committee Monday that seeks an audit of the more than $450 million donated so far to Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
"We believe that, based on the law, the Obama campaign has accepted contributions from foreign nationals and has knowingly done so through at least its failure to reasonably investigate where all this money is coming from," RNC Chief Counsel Sean Cairncross told reporters Sunday.
Now wait just a minute, here. As I recall, wasn't it John McCain who had to return campaign donations because of a dubious donor base?
One example here:
John McCain returns some California donors' money
John McCain decided...to return about $50,000 in campaign contributions from California donors, after media reports questioned how a businessman with a lucrative federal defense contract raised the money.
Harry Sargeant III, a prominent figure in the Florida Republican Party, has raised about $500,000 for McCain's presidential bid. The campaign sent letters...explaining federal campaign finance law to all donors whose contributions were solicited by Sargeant and his business partner, Mustafa Abu-Naba'a, believed to be a citizen of Jordan and the Dominican Republic.
Only U.S. citizens can donate to federal campaigns, and the money must be their own.
Well, apparently, the Obama campaign has total recall of McCain's sleazy fundraising as well:
"Because of campaign finance issues, John McCain has had to return over $1.2 million to donors who potentially violated the law with their contributions," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement Sunday. "We look forward to a thorough investigation into whether John McCain’s campaign has returned all of the money it raised from foreign nationals," Burton added.
Be forewarned, we'll probably hear McCain complaining that since Obama opted out of public financing, the RNC and FEC had no choice but to investigate. Whatever. It's not as if the American electorate decided to vote with their dollars, or anything like that. After eight years, this is a neocon paradise! Why would anyone want to change?
