I just read on Americablog that Sarah Palin did nothing today when someone from her crowd called for Obama's death:
"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.
"Boooo!" said the crowd.
"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.
"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.
"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.
Palin went on to say that "Obama held one of the first meetings of his political career in Bill Ayers's living room, and they've worked together on various projects in Chicago."
I cannot believe this. All day I've had this horrible feeling that this is only going to escalate into something really horrible.
All the internet rumors flurrying around is bad enough. But when you have two people in spotlight giving credit to these rumors, you compound the problem and get the nutcases really riled up. And who knows what they will do then.
John McCain and Sarah Palin are choosing this sleazy low road and it can have worst consequences than just Obama losing the election: it feeds the fires of hatred. It's legitimizing nutcase conspiracy theories. It's breeding fear about a man simply because of his skin color and middle name, insinuating that he's a terrorist who will put our country in danger.
And, there will be some looney tune who will hear this from McCain and Palin and think "Oh my god, the internet rumors are right. He must be stopped." And, I really worry that the nutcase isn't going to be happy with just voting for McCain. I'm worried some nutcase will try to take matters in his own hands.
Today John McCain allowed someone to play up the "Hussein" part of Obama's name.
Today John McCain allowed someone to scream "Terrorist" and he did nothing.
Today Sarah Palin let chants of "kill him" be shouted during her speech (and she did nothing to rebut it).
All weekend Sarah Palin said Obama pals around with terrorists, is "dangerous" for America, and that she is "fearful" of him.
This is racist. This is atrocious. This is DANGEROUS.
