I'm worried. I'm really worried. This is my first diary on Daily Kos...is it ok to use it to raise a question, rather than to show off how much I know?
I've been reading more and more about voter purges and the demonizing of ACORN. Would the GOP try and steal an election? GASP!
This morning during the local break on NPR, I heard a story out of Kansas City about fraudulent voter registrations...hundreds of them, attributed to ACORN workers. These folks are not stupid...the election official interviewed for the story was careful to say they don't suspect any effort to influence the outcome of the November election on the part of those submitting fraudulent registrations, rather, they think that paid ACORN workers are cutting corners to make a fast buck. Clever.
What I want to know is if you're a purged college student in Virginia or a purged resident of public housing in Chicago...or someone's grandfather that changed address to a senior living center and you think you're registered to vote...but aren't, what happens? Are you turned away at the polls? Cast aside in the recounts that are planned to take advantage of the way the GOP has softened this particular battlefield?
Remember, as good as all the tracking polls, internals, instas, etc. make us feel...the only poll that counts is the one at the polling place where election ballots are cast.
Are the forces of good prepared for what seems to be unfolding?
UPDATE #1: Just to clarify, the story was during the local portion on my NPR affiliate. It wasn't part of the national broadcast. Also, I'd like to add a thought that I omitted from the original diary...that the meme that people lie to pollsters...that people will claim that they support Obama while systemically incapable of a) voting for an African American and b) incapable of admitting same, may also be part of preparing this battlefield. This would be to answer those that say 'what do you mean McCain WON...haven't you been watching the polls?'
