This is going to be short. I haven't written about prop. 8, because I was hoping I wouldn't have to. I thought that here in Cali, we could handle our own ignorant bigots. I was wrong.
But that's not the point of this diary. The point of this diary is to tell you about Vinny.
Vinny is the adopted child of my gay friend. I have had the supreme joy of babysitting him a couple times, and I can tell you that if having two fathers has an effect on children, it is that the children turn out to be awesome. Vinny is the kind of kid that makes you wish you had kids if you don't.
This is the part that makes me upset. Vinny has been with his two loving dads (who have maintained a steady relationship for over a decade) for the majority of his life. However, in the past, adoption law made the situation tenuous because of the fact that his two parents could not marry. Vinny could only become the child of one of his dads, making all kinds of problems for them.
Then we had a victory for civil rights. Vinny's parents got married.
Now... well, you know what the polls look like. And the ONLY reason that prop. 8 has gained traction is the incessant advertising that distorts the truth. It's on every other commercial break around here.
Obama is against it. Our senators are against it. The mayors of SF, LA and SD are all against it. Our newspapers have all editorialized against it. Arnold is against it. Even Google is against it.
But still, the assholes have the money, and they are running the ads nonstop.
On election day, it will be a pyrrhic victory in CA if this passes. It will be a pyrrhic victory for all true progressives. Obama is going to win. Please help us. This sad excuse of a bill only serves one purpose: to place in peril the security and well being of countless families like Vinny's.
We cannot fail.
