Jennifer Rubin, a conservative blogger at Commentary Magazine, has a remarkable knack for being wrong, often stunning wrong.
Today she took exception with Christopher Buckley's endorsement of Barack Obama, which is a serious stab wound to the conservative movement. She wrote:
A first-class temperament does not consort with terrorists or lie about his affiliation with the same. A first-class temperament does not invoke the race card when presented with legitimate criticism. A first-class temperament does not seek to shed his Leftist skin for political expediency.
The funny thing is that even her conservative readers have been attacking her for it.
Here are some samples:
I don’t understand why, but have been conflicted through the entire race. My concern is that I find Obama to be wise and sane for these troubled times. Yet, I consider myself leaning conservative, especially in fiscal matters, in many years prior. McCain troubles me in his dangerous ambition that does not have a complimentary message of responsible government. He is fit to be a legislator, checked by his peers to ensure the safety of America. In the executive branch, however, his ideas fall onto socialist ideals. The divestment of taxpayer monies into failed and failing mortgages seem only to bolster the coffers and esteems of the banking elite. This is not conservatism. This s not even centrism. This is farcical to say the least. So, to be brief, I must trust Sen. Obama because he is the more responsible candidate, seen fit to take control by solid measure of this government in peril through his straight talk and modest proposals. In these troubled times, I don’t think the conservative party has been able to bring forth a reasonable solution.
Jennifer, you are an intellectual disgrace. As the McCain campaign unravels; Sarah Palin is revealed as a liar ("Bridge to Nowhere") and criminal ("Troopergate"); and right wing "supporters" of McCain reveal their racismas boo McCain for calling Obama a decent man, you continue to peddle your shallow twaddle to the few ignorant wide-eyed true believers still left. At one time, Commentary at least held itself up to a standard of intellectual principles and some premise of human dignity, writers such as yourself have turned it into a marginal laughingstock.
Moderates like myself could have tolerated a McCain presidency quite nicely. But picking Palin — a show horse for right wing fanatics — turned my tolerance into disgust. The polls show that I am not alone. I hope to see Fox pundits lick their wounds come November 5.
I loved Reagan. Things have gone downhill (in the Republican Party) since then. Now all the Republican Party stands for are hatred for science, belief that The Bible is the only Word of God, belief that the planet is 6k years old, hatred of gays, hatred of The Other. It’s time to dump the Republican Party as we know it, and inject some rationalism into things. No more consorting with televangelists. No more consorting with idiot talk radio hosts like The Fat Man. No more fake scientists (lobbyists for big oil) trying to say there is no global warming. No more supporting idiots like GW Bush and Cheney if they run for office. No more torture of prisoners. No more of the crap Bush Doctrine. The Republican Party has almost killed itself off. Good. Maybe something better will arise.
If the GOP only knew the branding damage it’s doing to itself. A brand many of us spent a lot of time building. I’ve fought for this party for years. I have friends at Cato and MI. I’ve been reading Wm. Buckley since his book "Right Reason" and his essay "Aweigh" in his final book "Miles Gone By" is just perfect. I’ve introduced people to Hayek, Von Mises and Say. Now the vapidity of Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and Sarah Palin are all that is left. Well, them and a hate that may get someone killed. I can’t endorse this. I’ve NEVER voted a Democratic straight ticket, but this time I will.
I have a feeling that this is just the beginning.
Just added a video, because today has been a good day.
