A McCain surrogate was caught today behaving like a McCain surrogate:
"I also would also pray, Lord, that your reputation is involved in all that happens between now and November, because there are millions of people around this world praying to their god–whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah–that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons."
Here's the news part. McCain's campaign risked turning his own angry mob against McCain by releasing the following statement in response:
While we understand the important role that faith plays in informing the votes of Iowans, questions about the religious background of the candidates only serve to distract from the real questions in this race about Barack Obama's judgment, policies and readiness to lead as commander in chief." - Wendy Riemann, Midwest Regional Communications Director
Translation:
Our internal polling has revealed that sleazy attempts to stoke the racist core of the Republican party have yielded negative returns. We overestimated the stupidity of the electorate and the size of our flock of Republican sheep, as we relied on 2004 data. What we should have instead considered is Bush's favorable ratings, which correctly reflect the percentage of voters dim enough to fall for the Klan-rally strategy.
I doubt McCain is disgusted by his campaign tactics. Based on his recent, uncharacteristically civilized admonishments of his scary base, McCain is more likely sickened that his campaign's sleaze strategy was rewarded with sinking favorable ratings and tanking poll numbers.
