Diary will be off  list soon given polling news, Nobel Prize, etc.  Take a sec to read and act?  Thx.

Politifact.com has given the Ayres smear a Pants on Fire rating.  This is a well done examination of the Ayres "issue."  It even shows how the same information could be spun in a way that could alarm Kossacks!  Taking on the article by Kurtz  (Kurtz Attack Article), PolitiFACT.com does it's own spin by way of example:

Had Kurtz chosen to accuse Obama of carrying water for the conservative Annenberg, he might have written: "CAC disbursed money to various business-friendly entities, such as the Museum of Science and Industry and the Commercial Club of Chicago."

See how easy it is?

Truth-o-meter conclusion?  This attack is false, but it's more than that – it's malicious.

Given the promised video about Ayres coming out, pls:

  1. Send emails with the PolitiFACT.com link to ALL family and friends, TODAY.
  1. Send a THANK YOU email to the author Alexander Lane, so his email is not just filled with hate mail.

Links and my thank you email below the fold.

Here is the link for the PolitiFACT.com Truth-o-meter article:

Ayres Truth-o-meter

Do not underestimate the power of Swiftboating.  With the Ayres email coming out, IMHO we need to innoculate people with the truth on a direct basis as quickly and far and wide as possible.  How better to fight whisper campaigns than to send out the truth via the same channel?

1.  Here was my quick email to friends and family.

Hey there,

Just ran across Politifact's Truth-o-meter regarding the Ayres/ domestic terrorist stuff that Palin and McCain have been talking about all week.  Truth-o-meter is giving the whole thing a "Pants on Fire" lie rating.

Take a read and let me know what you think:

http://www.politifact.com/...

Also, they have found out where the "Obama is a Muslim" stuff came from.  You will NOT believe the idiot who started that one.

http://www.nytimes.com/...

Hope you're hanging in there with the economic news we're hearing about.

I believe we have a role and duty to play in supporting real journalism. It is not enough to decry and lament the MSM not having the courage to be objective.  We also need to enCOURAGE them to do so and express our appreciation when they do.  Please, take some time to email your support to PolitiFACT and Alexander Lane, today.

2.  My thank you email letter:

Thank you.

I have a feeling that your email is about to become clogged with some nasty emails.  I just wanted to make sure you found at least one big THANK YOU for carefully researching and clarifying this controversy.  It is quite clear that people in the McCain campaign are trying to mislead people regarding Senator Obama, which is extremely disappointing.  It is one thing to attack and disagree with policy positions; it is quite another to try to make a “malicious” and untrue case against someone’s character.  I am saddened that Senator McCain has chosen to make this obviously nonsense whisper campaign the centerpiece of his campaign.  My biggest fear is that this has already planted a poisonous pill that will serve to unnecessarily divide and further frighten Americans just when we will need to pull together to address a trifecta of the greatest threats we have ever faced – climate change, economic meltdown, and a massive energy system transformation.

You may be in for a rough three weeks for researching and writing the truth.  IMHO you have done a courageous thing, and as an American History and government teacher, I thank you for this act in the finest tradition of Zenger.  Hang in there if the hot winds of hate start to blow your way.  You are not alone.  There are indeed millions of Americans who will appreciate your article and who will use your research to help them make sense of this situation for themselves.

To send Alexander Lane a similar Thank you:

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

As an educator it has pissed me off that valid attempts to improve school performance and to increase the number of stakeholders in our public school systems have been attacked in such a way.

What, Polifact.com did not state, but as someone who has been involved in the  educational grantmaking and grantwriting field, that this collaborative team approach is desired (external partners) and sometimes even required with big foundations, to infuse new enthusiasm, try different educational approaches, to encourage working together to build up programs through synergy rather than duplicate efforts.

In NYC this has been done through collaborative grants where library systems and nonprofits and the public schools have received grants to work together to improve GED outcomes, adult literacy, afterschool programs, literacy, parent-school collaborative efforts, and with Annenberg, increase arts education in schools through arts program run by real artists.

This exact sinister (according to Kurtz) process - external groups, overarching board handling out money to different groups that propose community based, innovative program ideas to increase participation and performance in schools -  is often required guess what - grants being given out by that most sinister of groups - the U.S. government!

community involvement and financial support.  Imagine the local symphony involved with school band programs!  Wow, that would be radically wonderful.

This article will give me a great chance for my kids to further explore bias in that it shows spin both ways.  I am trying to help them become critical thinking citizens, so the spin examples in one article are really helpful.

I like the way the article was written. Let people know that this is just not ONE group calling McCain out on his outrageous tactics.

Factcheck.org wrote a similar analysis condemning McCain's ads and rhetoric on the stump on October 10.

    He Lied About Ayers?

(full disclosure, I discussed this in a diary,
Diary: Give it Up McCain, Ayers Ad Addlepated

The problem is, McCain keeps running and running and running and running the ads (like that energizer bunny, his programmed attacks pound these lies in people's minds)

We have got to do more to combat it - because though people don't like the negativity, it can affect individual votes, confirm rascist fears and (god forbid) incite hate talk and acts against Obama and the campaign.

think about using OUR email lists to send a dose of truth though the main whisper campaign channel?

I'll also add your diary to my post.

I forgot I could edit a diary after posting so long ago!

Alas, my email lists are thin and exclude many former acquaintances who pissed me off during the Bush Nightmare years.

But I will do my best!

PS. my diary was posted just when the Troopergate report was being released - as it can imagine to scrolled rather quickly down the list of diaries :)

and am sorry you got back such ugliness in response to a very objective look at the issues.

I hope that some people will let their eyes be opened - and perhaps they are processing the info in their heads, and not yet having knee-jerk reactions like that woman did to you posting.

You and bkamr are absolutely correct - this needs to be  spread beyond our comfortable sphere of influence.

I am phonebanking today - and usually don't bring up the hate talk - but I have mentioned the prosecutor letter that says this is bunk and that Obama has nothing to apologize or explain.
