I know. I know. We all know. We all know Obama has everything under control. However, due to the fact that I (like each one of you) believe I know all the strategies and tactics and language choices necessary to win the election, here is what I suggest Barack should say in response to the Ayres' attack in the final debate:
To the middle class voter, I say to you: Imagine you work hard to improve your community, and you volunteer to serve your child's school on the PTA. The PTA holds a festival, and at this festival, you work the hamburger and hot dog stand with other volunteers. Then ten years later, someone attacks you because one of the other volunteers who flipped hamburgers had done something bad forty years ago.
Imagine you volunteer to coach your child's Little League baseball team, and ten years later, someone attacks you because the volunteer who raked the diamonds before the games had done something bad forty years ago.
Regrettably, that is what Seantor McCain is talking about. Sadly, that is apparently Senator McCain's closing argument to you, the American people, about why he should be President in these challenging times.
Now, if that is how this election is going to be decided, we could talk from now until November about the shady characters who are connected to Senator McCain's past, but this time in history requires all of us to be bigger than that.
The way we run our campaigns is the best indicator of how we will run the country. The way we lead our campaigns gives you, the voters, the best indication of how we will lead in office.
America, Senator McCain is attempting to reduce this election to a juvenile, school-cafeteria food fight. The voters who built my campaign deserve better than that. Senator McCain's voters deserve better than that. The legacy of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Kennedy deserves better than that.
