Seriously. I struggle to make enough time to get out to canvas my neighborhood. But on October 31, a bazillion people are going to "canvas" my house looking for candy. A lot of them will be accompanied by someone old enough to vote.
At first I thought this was mostly a feel good thing - fun, but not very meaningful. But think of all the benefits:
- Cooler than a yard sign, and in view of lots of foot traffic right before Nov 4.
- An opportunity to host a BYOP party (you can advertise one at the link above, or just do one on your own). House parties give me the jitters, but even I can talk pumpkin.
- Lots of pumpkin innards. Pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie for volunteers at my local Obama office. Yum. Maybe I'll carve them a pumpkin too.
- You never know what pumpkin carving for Obama might lead to.
This is what I love, love, love about Obama. He inspires ordinary people to get other ordinary people involved in making ideas happen. I love the man's speeches, but this is what truly gives me hope for our country.
