As we all know by now, Obama thinks that we should engage our enemies in diplomacy. McCain, however, thinks that we should be given what we want before we sit down with any country, which of course defeats the point of diplomatic meetings. Before last night, I thought the McCain approach was totally asinine. Now, I think that he has a point.
If I were McCain, I would be afraid to sit down with foreign leaders too. Obama spent a week goading McCain into bringing up Ayers. McCain took the bait, and Obama made him pay for it. McCain looked petty, angry, and out of touch with what people care about. He was left blubbering like an idiot. Imagine if McCain had to negotiate with our enemies. McCain vs. Putin? We would cede Alaska within the first 20 minutes of talks and by the end of the first day, parts of Washington state may well be in Russian hands.
We thought that McCain was being spiteful in refusing to meet with the Prime Minister of Spain, but in reality, he just knew his own weakness. I mean, how long before McCain gets tricked into giving away Florida back to the Spanish? Given that my parents live there, I certainly wouldn't want President McCain sitting down with Zapatero.
So, next time you hear McCain and Palin talking about how it would be foolish to sit down with other governments, cut them some slack. They're not exactly Obama and Biden here. Letting them talk to our enemies may be one of the biggest threats to our national security.
